Default Fuel Smell in car after fill-up

Hey guys,
I just bought this car and have not driven it much because it has needed work. I drove it to Texas from California and noticed quite a few problems. I have got most of them tracked down and fixed but I have no idea where to start on this problem.

It did throw a SES light for a small evap leak. I also pulled the carpet on the hatch and there is duct tape over it so I am sure someone has done the "trap door" mod for a fuel pump. Even though this mod has been done there still should not be a strong smell of gas in the car should there?

It does not smell unless I just got done filling up and it goes away after 30 minutes or so of driving. It does not matter whether I stop when the pump first shuts off or I top it off (I only did this for testing purposes. I usually stop when it click off.)

Any help or ideas would be appreciated. I want to get this thing on the road ASAP.

Fill it w/ the trap door off. See any leak at the pump hanger area??

I will do that later today since my parts for my rear end just got here yesterday and it will be drivable again. I will let you know what I figure out. I sold my pickup truck so now I have to use it as a daily driver.

I opened the trap door up and looked as soon as I filled it up and did not see fuel anywhere. I also got under the car and looked everywhere. I see no visible fuel. I am guessing it is fumes only... Guess that makes it even harder to track down

One possibility I'd point to is the o-ring that seals the entire assembly to the tank at the top. I actually had this problem where the o-ring slipped down into the tank while I was tightening down the retaining ring and didn't realize it. I filled the tank the next time and going around a corner, gas was spewing out the top of the tank!

Another consideration would be to check that the evap system is hooked up in the front and back. The charcoal canister is in the rear drivers side wheel well below the filler neck. If the hose is off or cracked, it would spew fumes.

It's been 100°+ here in OKC, I'm sure you guys are seeing similar temps down there.

I've been getting the smell of fuel out of my DD, as well. I'm suspecting the charcoal/evap canister. Might check it out.

Granted, my DD is a Honda, but they should have those components in common.

When you fill up, do you stop when the pump stops or do you fill the neck?

You threw a code for an EVAP leak. That's your fuel smell. EVAP vents pressure in the tank from fumes.

My 97 had EVAP problems (codes throwing an SES light) and I noticed bad fuel smell a lot. I replaced the solenoid and the valve. One is in the canister behind the driver rear tire. The other was in the engine bay. Problem solved.

Thanks guys... just saw all of these replies. I am going to try replacing the solenoid and valve and go from there.

That's what i was thinking, Only seems to be when the tank is full.

Trap doors rule!
