Default Surge tank.... sort of

I am doing an ly6 s480 combo looking for 850whp with e85. I am planning on running a 255lph in tank and a fuelab 41401 to come on at high speed with a hobbs switch.

The oem tank is plastic, and I would have to mount the fuelab very low to have it gravity fed, assuming I could even get a fitting on the bottom of tank that wouldn't leak.

Will this (sort of a) surge tank drawing work for me? Excuse the crude drawing.

The 2 pumps shouldn't be fighting each other if the system is at one pressure? Once the fuelab -8 line to the tee at fuel rail fills with fuel, the 255 can't backfeed towards the fuelab because of the integrated post pump check valve?

Thanks for any help.

It would be a very unusual way to configure it, but it probably should work...after some amendments

This is the correct layout to use a swirl/surge tank

You're combining feeds in an unusual way, and also you cannot return fuel to the surge tank, with no way of it ever getting back to the main tank.

I know it is unusual. But I want the quiet intank pump for normal driving and the big (loud) pump to come on at low boost (the lowest hobbs switch I can find). I have the overflow fitting from small cell in trunk going back to main tank below it. The -8 fuel cell fitting would be on top of the oem plastic tank.

So under normal driving the return would keep the cell in trunk full and overflow to the oem main tank?? Wont that work? Thanks for the reply.

Or just stick a couple of Walbro 340's etc in-tank and keep it simple.

I did look into twin in tank pumps. I "could" still have low fuel starvation problems with the oem tank. I already have the fuelab pump left over from a different project. Also, small cell would be easy to drain and run pump gas through injectors for storage?

If it sounds like I am trying to talk myself into this setup, I am.. But am open to all opinions!!!!! LOL

So I changed my mind again.... Gonna do a conventional surge tank with twin walbro 450's. It will be similar to the radium tank, just not as pretty, and hope to have less than 300 in it including the pumps. I started ordering parts.

My question is about the return from regulator going into the top of surge tank. Can that just be a weld bung? Or will it need a tube/hose attached to get it draining more towards the bottom of the tank? I can't see what difference it would make, but I have never built one before. Thanks!

No idea what you're trying to describe, but yes the return from the reg should go into a high location on the swirl tank.

Or if your lift pump is up to the task of supplying all the fuel the engine will ever need, you could return from the reg to the main tnak.

HAHA! Its never cheaper to keep changing your mind after you already started acquiring parts. Details about that (and some pics of the car) here.

Towards the end, because I changed my mind, lol.

EDIT-forgot the link...

I want to use the oem 3/8 feed line as the return to the surge. I forgot about the oem inline filter. I cant reverse the filter and keep it in there, correct? Does anyone make a fuel filter delete to attach to the factory lines? I could do it with an adapters, but at that price, I may as well just run a whole new line.

They make these now, which under many situations, eliminates the need for a surge tank

Still putting this thing together. Conventional surge tank with 2 walbro 450's. I ordered the universal bulkhead harness from racetronix, which has 4 14ga wires. I was planning on 2 each power and grounds. Are those wires big enough?????? The walbro wires inside the tank can't be bigger than that? Thanks!

Got the harness today. And after more reading, everybody is running 10ga minimum. I guess the fuel in the tank keeps the thin walbro wires cool?? So anyways, I am going to to power each pump with 2 14ga wires which should be 8ga. And ground them through the threaded rod fuel pump hanger that sticks out the top of the tank.
