Default GM's Direct Fuel Injection w/ VVT -- 2008

Looks like GM is taking the next EFI step with DFI w/ VVT:

Is anyone working on bringing this technology to the large displacement V8 aftermarket?

Any thoughts Re the feasibility of someone doing so in, say, the next 2-3 years?

Thanks in advance.

I think the better question is when GM will start placing direct injection on the LS series engines. With the four cylinder and the six cylinder set ups now in place it will only be a matter of time. I can't wait to see a 5.3 with Direct Injection, VVT, DOD and e85 capability. The l-92 is there minus the direct injection, but imagine what kind of fuel economy could be had by combining those technologies and in a car format you'd probably be pushing 340 horses. This would be a win, win set up. I love horsepower, but ultimately mpg will factor heavier into engine choices in the very near future.

Hear Hear, Widetracker!

Given the amazing power/displacement being generated by Audi, Porsche, AMG and others with this tech, I can't wait to see what a 454 with this stuff can do. (The 2010 ZO6 is rumored at 700hp -- I'd bet this tech is in the GMPP works.)

A comparo:

Comparisons:
2006 Honda Civic SI - 7.2
2006 Honda S2000 - 5.5
1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 SS - 5.2
2002 BMW M3 - 4.7
2004 Ford Mustang Cobra SVT - 4.5
2006 Subaru WRX STI - 4.5
2002 Aston Martin V-12 Vanquish - 4.4
1997 McLaren F1 - 3.9
2003 Dodge Viper SRT-10 - 3.9
2005 Ford GT - 3.6
2002 Lamborghini Murcielago - 3.6
2006 Chevrolet Corvette ZO6 - 3.5
1999 Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR - 3.4
2006 Koenigsegg CCR - 3.3
2003 Saleen S7 - 3.3
2002 Mosler MT900 Photon - 3.1
2007 Factory Five GTM - 3.1
2006 Bugatti Veyron - 2.3
2002 Viper Hennessey Venom 1000TT - 2.3

There are other noteworthy kit cars -- the Ultima for one. But one can build an even more powerful GTM than the LS7 GTM tested -- and, over time, build the driving skills needed to subdue it. For me, after factoring in personal details, the GTM is the front runner.

Wow, thats good to know GM is stepping it up. I wonder if this motor will make its way into the Solstice and Sky...And with any luck it'll be the base Camaro motor in 09.

DI into a V8, soon, but not tomorrow im guessing.

(sigh) seeing GM climb back to the top of the hill is great - nothing like trouncing the competition - but it's bitter/sweet to think that our LS1s/LS2s could be eclipsed so quickly. i guess you can't be on top forever , how long could 50 year old technology be king of the hill anyway???

it may be time to put the over head valves to bed, but when my build is done, i'm gonna enjoy showing those fancy dancy new fangled DI engined cars my tail lights......for a few more decades any way

...oh brave new world that has such [revolutionary engine technology] in it...

Only us and the ricers are using new engines. Most people are using first gen engines. 572 big blocks and 502 Ram Jets... They are using engines from the sixties (almost fifty years ago) and they are just bolting some newer stuff on them. LSX will probably live as long as gas does.

Remember that old blocks with new tech are over 200mph at the 1/4 mile.

Certainly.

But that doesn't mean that upgrading these high displacement beauties wouldn't make them faster and/or offer the market more good choices.

My one concern is that if NASCAR goes FI, as they seem to be, and GM and others modernize their larger engines, government may come in with sweeping legislation outlawing things like carbs, etc.

Ten years ago, I'd think this impossible, but given how passive Americans are these days Re government expansion in such areas, who knows?

Over two years later- GM has now added VVT to the 5.3. Let's cross our fingers on Direct Injection.
