Question MOSER from 4.10 to 3.42

Hi Everyone,

My friend bought recently Camaro 2001 6 speed with 12-bolts Moser rearend and the ratio is 4.10

The question is, can we change the ring and pinion from 4.10 to 3.42 easily? any problems with carrier or differential?

Thanks in advance

You'd have to know if the carrier is a FOUR SERIES or not. If it's a 4 series, then 410's are the lowest you can go, without swapping to a different carrier. If it's a 3 series carrier, then you can go as low as 3.08's.

Ok I understand. But the problem is we don't know which series it is, so any different way to know?

We don't want to open the TA cover without anything.

I went from 3.42 to 4.10's and needed no change other then the install kit.

Was that with a stock 10 bolt, or a 12 bolt rear? There is no 4 series carrier for a 10 bolt, just 2 series or 3 series, which makes the choices much easier.

If the original poster's 12 bolt rear has a 4 series carrier, there are no lower (than 4.10) ratios available. They will not work. He'd have to also get a 3 series carrier, if he wanted 3.42's.

Fahad:
I'd try contacting MOSER and ask what carrier they use in their rear assemblies. They may simply use a 3 series carrier with a thicker 4.10 ring & pinion gearset. If that's what they do, then a 4.10 to 3.42 swap could be done easily (and much cheaper) than also swapping the carrier/differential. Even if you had to swap carriers, it's still pretty much just as easy as a gear swap since you'll have to remove carrier as well as reset backlash and pinion depth no matter what. Good Luck. Hope this helped.

Sorry, Moser 12 bolt.

I used to have everything listed in the sig.

Moser sold me a rear equipped with a tru trac diff (non eaton), and 3.42, then I busted that unit and went to 4.10's locally instated with a newer Eaton updated unit. Both still broke but otherwise it was a straight forward gear install.

Gotcha. If yours originally had 3.42's, then it had to be a 3 series carrier originally.
Hopefully, they use those even with a 4.10 gear. That would make the OP's swap a little easier/cheaper.

btw, there's no specs on/of anything in your sig?
