Anybody ever break a 2.73-geared 10 bolt?
Sorry if this has been asked, search didn't pull it up.
I'm planning on hooking up a dry kit and spraying on the launch. Of course I'll need to get something stickier than Nittos, maybe ET Street, Hoosier or BFG drag radials. With the stock 2.73 gears back there, am I looking at a tow truck ride home? I know that these gears are kinda thick and help soften the hit, but these 7.5" rear diffs are notoriously fragile. I've never personally heard of someone with 2.73 gears breaking at the line, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. Maybe it's because guys who are getting serious about their ETs are ditching the highway gears. Anybody here snap a 2.73 rear end?

Hey Tommy,
When I had 2.73's in my Formula I had basic bolt on and sprayed it with no issue. However, I didn't spray directly out of the hole. I waited til the car started to go then flipped the switch. I know that hurt my ET but I wanted to be safe. I don't think you will have any problems given the 2.73's are much stronger than the numerically lower gear ratio's plus your stall isn't huge. Good luck. Post results!!!

keep in mind lots of people dont actually break gears. i have heard of a lot of people breaking the torsen posi units. they are notoriously weak. so even if the gears hold up you arent in the clear at all....

The rearend has been broken 3 times in my car, once with stock gears, and twice with 373's. Two times were with drag radials at the track, first time at launch, other time going into second gear with nitrous. One time on the street on a 3 to 4 shift, getting on the interstate. Carrier busted and took off a few teeth on the gears. This was all done by previous owner. He still had the old gears when i bought the car and showed me the carnage. LOL Some are stronger than others and last, while some just let go or are improperly set up. I will be getting a 9" or 12 bolt soon.
