Default problems with gear install.

This was my first time doing gears, I first did them and had .009 backlash and when i drove the car it had a little whine, so i decided to tear it down and try to get it right. Well it looks like the pinion needs to move towards the ring gear according to the marks in the paint. Also Im wondering how do I go about shimming the pinion towards the ring gear, does it go under the crush sleeve? Sorry if these are dumb questions, but im just trying to learn how to do it.

I have some crappy pictures of the paint if anyone would like to see them, also i have the backlash at .007 right now. When I put the axle and spin the gears backwords, it also makes a ratcheting sounds, but when i spin them forward it sounds fine..

i would shoot for seven rather then nine but thats just my preference. The pinion shim to move it closer to the ring gear is located between the back-side of the pinion gear and the pressed on main (larger, inside) pinion bearing. You will need a press to remove it and most recommend not reusing it bc it ruins/distorts it when you press it off. I personally had a slip fit bearing for mock up so i havent dealt with the situation you are currently in..

Im no expert on wipe patterns by any means, and i dont want to tell you something that may not be right. When you say you might put your stocker back in, you didnt disassemble it and retrieve your factory shim from the pinion? I have always started there with great results, most times the factory shim lines the gears up pretty damn good. You will need a press to retrieve it.

I assume this is the new ring and pinion? IF so the pinion shim is too thick. Drive side pattern is going flank on the gear. Less pinion shim and .006 to .010 backlash is fine.

Need to know what shim is on the pinion now and what brand of gears you are using. Send me a PM when you pull it off and I will check my logs.

Who did you get those from? They do not look like GM gears. New GM Gears are a more curved gear tooth, you have the older 5 step cut gear. Hmmmmm.

ok, there was .035 shim in the pinion I took .005 and now have .030 in it, heres what i came up with not much of a change, should i go more?

also what i dont understand from the look of pics shouldnt I be adding shims instead of pulling?

^^^im sorry but in that first pic i dont like how close the gear is to the tooth edge (not the inside edge but the lip of the tooth). I was always told it should be centered on the tooth face.

click on the download manual and scroll to the bottom.

So you are saying i should try and move the ring gear away from the pinion right?

also Im almost thinking about pulling all .035 of my shims out of the pinion cuz i think thats what i need to move it.

did you read that write-up? i had about 4 write-ups when i did my first one and read them all, plus the internet has some good gear wipe pics/drawings. But pics of actual gears can be deceiving thats why i suggest getting a great pattern then comparing it as much as you can so you can decide what you should do.

yeah, i have looked at the write-ups, just havent seemed to get anything right, so thats why im gonna try and remove all of my pinion shims, which i hope fixes it.
