Default Axle C clip

I've been working on this dang axle for 3 hours now and could really use some help. I cant get the c clip out. there seems to be just 1/16th of an inch that is stopping me. Am i missing something? i have the abs sensor out and everything else, but this axle just wont go in far enough for the c clip to come out. i am searched and searched with no answer. Please help!

btw, the BFH isnt helping either.

You're not hitting the axle, are you? And the cross pin is out (just checking)? I would have said remove your ABS sensor for a 4-channel rear end, but you said you did that.

It should take hardly any effort at all to push the axle in far enough to get the c-clip out.

Give the axle a good whack with a dead blow hammer.

the 1st pic shows a loose left side carrier bearing and both carrier bearing caps removed(evidenced by the bolt holes). Is the carrier loose and 'flopping around' and preventing the carrier from staying in proper position for c-clip removal.

There was some play in the carrier (i dont know if that is normal). I removed the bearing caps with a hope of being able to move the carrier enough to get the clips out. It didnt work so i replaced the caps.

how much play should there be? maybe they need to be replaced. If i have to replace them i can probably cut the bearings out and then take the c-clip out.

thoughts?

you don't want to cut.press them off.take a wedge(cold chisel)and shore up the left side so it wont move.then spin c clip so open part is up and get a big flat screwdriver and go into the clip grove and pry while hitting the end of axle(between the studs)with a dead blow hammer or block of wood.all of this working together at the same time should work.also might want to stick a flex magnet on c clip to help finagle it out.

i posted an update with pictures on the OTHER ls1 site...

"so i finally got it apart. i hat to use a dremel and cut the carrier bearing out in order to move the carrier over far enough to get the clip out (that axle wasnt going in any further).

As i suspected, a repair bearing was used in this thing by the previous owner and that was the issue. now i have to replace both carrier bearings and im going to do both axle bearings. the one with be a repair bearing again and the other side will be the regular bearing. "

my three bearings - the tallest one is the one that was on the bad axle. this thing is way too big and stuck out of the housing 1/4 inch (estimate). that is the mother effer that wouldnt let me push the axle in far enough. Screw the guy who did that hack job. the one in the middle is the timken repair bearing that i will be using on my old axle until i can get new axles. The smallest one is the stock size that doesnt have a seal built in like the repair bearings do.
