You didn't waste your money. Take the 9 inch to a chassis guy along with a bare 10bolt and let them model it. Just take it to a good chassis guy.

I had good dealings with Quick,
be sure you order the correct axle splines to fit your old ford carrier

F-body 10 Bolts are like Forrest Gumps Chocolate...you never know what your going to get! I would say normally anytime you go over 425+ HP your living on borrowed time, however I have seen people in excess of 600+ still running on their 10 bolt.

If you do want to use this 9" of your's, my brother went this route and had the axles cut to proper length and then placed his 10 Bolt on a table...tack welded the Diff by the brackets onto the table..then he cut off the brackets..removed the 10 Bolt, placed the 9" onto the brackets on the table and then rewelded the 9" to the brackets.

Hope this helps.

I would spend the ~$1000 on the 9" that is made to fit. That's a good fair price. I don't think it would be worth it to modify an old 9" to fit you f-body, even if you got it for free.

I don't know about lots of money but I'm sure it could be done for alot less if you are on a budget. There are people out there that can fab the housing and get you set up with axles. Will it cost less than an axle/housing package....more than likely. But how much less is something I do not know. I assumed you were on a tight budget and with a little knowledge and research, you can get it done for less. It makes sense to buy a housing/axle package for $1050 if you have the extra dough laying around. It takes the legwork and research out of it in the case of being on a budget and you get everything you need except for a 3rd member.

This might be a stupid question but how does the brakes work?

I built a 9" for my buddies mud truck, so I'm familiar with the plates that the axles and in his case the drum backing plates bolted to. Are the factory 10 bolt brake brackets the same bolt spacing? Thus allowing the use of factory parts? If so how does the E-brake work? Same thing, factory disc plate will bolt to the 9" housing?

+2 on Bob, great and fast service.

to the OP, pull the center section, find out the splines of the carrier and order the axle houseing package for $1000, you'll be so freaking happy you did in the long run.

I have a 9" in my A4 2000 SS, it's piece of mind that I'll never blow it apart. Your $50 spend on the 9" just saved you about $1000 on the carrier set up as long you can live with the gears that are installed in it.

And if you do this you can prob still list the $50 9" on craigslist without center section and get at least $50 for it.
