Default How long will the 10 bolt hold?

Car is '94 Pontiac Firebird. LT-1 Intake and exhaust only, want to do 4.10's with my 6 speed swap. Strictly street tires on a DD car, and I promise I won't power shift it.

I KNOW, I know, get a proper rear, but how long will I have to save up for one?

With just those mods it'll hold up on the street just fine. I beat the snot out of mine with full bolt-ons and 4.10s and its holding up fine with 205k on it. I hear it crying now with the new motor

Well it still all depends on other variables such as wheel hop, 4.10s are KNOWN to come apart in 82-02 rear ends thats just a fact......

With that said you cannot determine how long 4.10s will last especially with a 6-spd car. i have seen them last as long as 5years and as little as 2 months. enjoy them while they last then instal a rearend thats designed to handle the abuse..

As long as you stay on hard street tires and you don't get it hooked up it will probably last a while IMO

I just got free 4.56 gears... A little taller than I want, but hey, free is the right price for me. It will only cost about $100 for an install kit.

According to http://www.f-body.org/gears/ the top of 4th will be 101 mph, so I would have to shift to 5th in the 1/4 even on the stock LT-1. How bad will that hurt my 1.4 mile time? 3-4 tenths maybe?

BTW, thanks for the input projectX, but I already know to get a better rear end, I was wondering if I would have time to save the money for a better rear and before the stocker POS grenades on me. Not trying to be an *** , but it was fairly obvious what I was asking.

You will be in the same position with 4.56s as you would with 4.10s they will shred apart..However if you spend small cash it wont really hurt you as much.
I strongly suggest using 28-29" tall tires to calm that gear down on the big end have the pcm tuned, raise the limiter to 6200 and expect to be there crossing the finish line.......Going into 5th gear sucks in the 1/4

Well, the free gears fell through, my friend ground on the gears to get the chunk out... At least it looks like I will have tome to save for a real rear end if I am careful though.

that's the best best advice Ive ever heard, no one has a crystal ball that tell you when things are gonna break. My 93 broke it 10 bolt 3 day's after I did a 6 speed swap but it had 190,000, and that was a death 14 second ride with rock hard regular-regular's on it. imho when you get to a 4.10 in a 7.5 ten bolt the pinion gear has gotten too small to support any real horsepower.

should last a while the lt-1 is not as powerful... The 4:10's will make it weaker though... Should last quite a while.......
