9" or 12 bolt! Need help by 11am EST
I need to decide on a rear.. I'm getting a 382 stroker built.... transmission is plenty strong... engine will be plenty strong... but I'm still running a 10 bolt
9" and 12 bolts are basically the same price...
Is the power lost through a 9" made up in stregth?
I plan on spraying out of the hole...
So anyone have suggestions one way or the other?
(I would have searched but I'm a lazy bastage )

Well from my knowledge, the 9 inch will need more horsepower to drive the sucker. But overall you cant go wrong with it.
Also.. Are you planning on STREET/STRIP? Or just track? If just track, the 9 inch is the way to go.. if street racing/driving is a factor, you may want to look into a 12 bolt with 3.73's or 4.11's. I am not the biggest fan of Strange right now, but alot of people would disagree with me.

I bought a strange 12 bolt with 4.30s. I drive my car daily on the street but occasionaly go to the strip. Strange has good customer service, thats a reason I would suggest them. The rear end they shipped to me was very nice as well, boxed up good, everything was in order except the diferential cover which was cracked from where it was stamped in the machining process, but they fixed the problem within a few days.

I would no doubt get a nine inch if you plan on spraying out of the hole. I personally think that the 9inch is the way to go. If you plan on changing gears the 9inch will let you setup two differnt carriers and just slide one in for street and have a different for all out race.

However, as always it depends on your axles (31 spline has less rotational mass- so less power wasted than 35s), also Richmond Gear is offering "lightweight" gears now- which can save 6lbs of rotational mass while offering the same strength (improved metallurgy- but yet to be proven- though I trust Richmond).

The 9" is stronger. The 12 bolt uses a little less power, and is a bit lighter. If you're talking about spraying out of the hole, I'd say that you've got an easy decision...9". Just to make the negatives a little less significant, go with the lighetr weight parts like the aluminum center section and drilled axles. That's what I did anyways.
