Default Question on Gear Upgrade

I recently picked up my first Camaro with an Auto trans, my other four were all T56's. My question is that after going thru the rpo codes...I discovered that this car has the 2.73's in it...or at least that is what was ordered on the car...my guess from the way it accelerates...it must still be in there. Is there anything good about these gears other than cruising the Interstates or should I upgrade to 3.42's or 3.73's? Also...for this 94Z, what brand or brands seem to perform the best and with the least gear noise?

I would go with 3.73s they will make a lot of difference,,With 2.73s you have a series 2 carrier so you will need a thck 3.73 gear..Yukon makes a thick gear and are usually pretty quiet & I've had good luck with Motive performance gears.

2.73 to 3.42= 25% increase in torque to rear wheels
2.73 to 3.73= 37% increase in torque to rear wheels

Cool...thanks guys on the info! Now I need to learn more about what's in the rear-end, and what a sieries 2 carrier means...I've heard of it...but now that it applies to me...I need to understand the specifics. Anyone else have anything to add or to recommend?

It looks like if you could get the 2 series carrier with the thick gears your gears might actually be a little stronger? The 3 series seems to have thicker teeth, but the 2 series is .300 thousands thicker, but the teeth also seem deeper. Not sure the .075 thou difference in the top to bottom on the slant to the gear would matter. Could be wrong..

the gear 'area',size, tooth size, tooth shape, tooth depth are the same, only the material UNDER the teeth is thicker to accomodate the different series carrier.

Lets keep going with this. So are the series 2 gears stronger? im guessing the pumpkin is shaped different for the two? maybe this is one of the reasons why people explode there 10bolts prematurely. i mean, i dont really hear of those with 2.73 gear ratios breaking as much as much as those with 3.23 and 3.42 if they never changed their gears from factory. to keep this a control, this statement assumes all 2.73 are series 2 and 3.23 and 3.42 series 3. thats how the come factory right?

rearend housing is the same for 2series 2.73s' and 3series 3.23s' and 3.42s'.
I'm guessing that you don't hear about 2.73 problems because very few mod, race, abuse with those still in rearend. AND we're talking about automatics only as only M6s' had 3.42s' and never 2.73s',so you can't discuss factory vehicles with 3.42s if the discussion is comparing 2.73s' to something else.

The 2.73 auto LT1 cars cant get out of their own way. I swapped one to 4.10s and it was tons better, although those can turn 3k on the interstate.

Holy mpg! thats too much for an a4 thats sees street use. guess 3.73 would be the highest ratio for an a4 thats not a track queen.

so keeping with autos, would a series 2 3.23 be stronger than a series 3 3.23? in terms of durability from launching if both were of oem grade?

your going to feel the difference with the 3:73's, but nothing compared to a high stall tc.

I'd do the gears and the stall! Talk about bringing a car to life! Bob

Don't really have to worry about strength behind an auto. Autos for the most part, don't break 10 bolts.

I broke mine too but that was on spray. Find yourself a 3.42 rear out of a M6 car and throw it in and be done with it.
