Question why is the 3.90:1 such an uncommon ratio?

I see a lot of the common 373 and 410, but why is it that the 390 is not as popular? I have a 98 z28 m6 and will be doing a 12 bolt swap soon. I was leaning twords the 3:90 gear. I had a set of 4:10s in the 10 bolt and am looking for a little more out of each gear. I have drivin a car with a set of 3:73s and I just don't think that it pulls hard enough for me. Any info and opinions are welcome.

from what most people i talk to say, mostly anything that's above 3:42 is at least a little or alota noisey. but i've been looking in to doing a 3:90 ratio also, i've been wandering about this for a while now.

I had 3.90s in my 12 bolt and was a little noisy, I have heard 3.73s in 10 bolts that were much louder new..

Most people dont get them because the read they are noisy and strange/moser charge 45.00 more since richmond is the only company that makes them. They were the perfect gear for my old head/cam combo, mostly 1/8 mile tracks here and I would go through the lights in 3rd right at 6500 with 26" tires. Probably could have 60' a little better with a 4.10 but I was happy with the 3.90.

I've got 3.90s in the '67. Couldn't tell if they make any noise, though. Something about the exhaust makes it want to be heard over everything else........

can someone help me out? I am trying to look into the strange 12 bolt, and can't seem to find many places that sell it. Can someone post some links of places to check out the strange 12 bolt.
