tru-trac noise question
I noticed a noise coming from the rearend the other day. It may have been doing it all along but i had the back seats out of it so it probably made the noise more noticable. It is a decently load clunking noise. Anyways, I notice the noise when I start from a stop and also if I let the car lug and cam surge. I never hear the noise going down the road normal or while switching gears. It seems to do it more If I try to make a turn from a stop (such as pulling out of my neighborhood). The rearend is a Moser 9 inch with True-trac, 4.11 gears, and alluminum center section. The Things I do know that may help you are:
The pinion when turned with parking brake on will turn roughly 1/4 inch. Is that normal?
With both rotors off, and turning one axle it is very quiet with just the noise of everything turning.
With one side being held so it can't move and the other side trying to be turned you can hear the clunking such as what I think I am hearing when driving the car.
There is little gear noise while driving. Only a little when you hit the gas and none on deceleration.
I check the rearend fluid and it was still full. I also tightened every bolt on the rear end and suspension so I am about 99% sure the noise is coming from the internals of the rearend.
Does all this seem normal and I am just worrying about nothing or does something need to be looked into? Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately, I have no answers for You, only another true trac in a moser 9" doing much the same thing, clunking going around corners. I am wishing now that I had gone with the locker, as I have heard of other true tracs doing the same thing.

The noise doesn't bother me as long as its normal. Like I said I only hear it doing it from a stop going straight but mainly while making a turn. Thanks for the input. Maybe we can both get answers.

Mine started making noise after a track visit with slicks (5500 rpm launch)... been 2 years now and still holding up. Just get a clunk from time to time when backing out of the driveway. Bob from brute speed said not to worry... I prob should tear into it to investigate

Anyone else have this issue? I drove it again today. It really only does it when turning. I really noticed it today going up hill and making a 90 degree turn into my garage. Its almost like I could feel one wheel slip or something but the wheel didnt turn over if that makes sense. Kinda a weird feeling. Any ideas?

The popping noise that a Truetrac can sometimes start making when taking turns is not normally a good sign. Some of them never seem to cause any further problems and others end up with a broken differential. What would I do? I'd keep driving it unless these popping sounds get worse. Bob

Do you have ABS, ABS/TCS or none? If you have ABS/TCS then you can replace it with a Trac-Loc. You can't use a Trac-Loc if you have only ABS, as there is not enough room in there for the ring. Bob

Just talked to the guy that helped me put the rear end in and he said the rear end itself did'nt have abs or tcs. Will the trac-loc work? If so, how much is it for everyting to put it in?

To follow this up, mine has also had the 1/4 inch or a few degrees rotation @ drive shaft before turning @ wheel. Have also noticed that it has evolved over time to where it now clunks w/ every shift. Am sure that this is due to the slop in the differential. The milliseconds spent between transmission gears allows the differential gears (spider) to move into the "slop" area & then the differential clunks as the spider re-meshes. Differential has also always dithered @ low parking lot speeds, as well. Dither meaning that the drive shaft rotates back & forth over the few degrees of movement noted. True-Trac is 4 or 5 years old now. It does its' job. It just clunks.
BTW, have confirmed that it is the True-Trac making the noise. It is not a pinion gear to final drive gear alignment issue.
Sorry, for the double post. Didn't have time earlier to provide all of the information.

A true trac should not make any noise, it is not normal is it isnt a ratcheting locker which always makes this sounds when there in is differential in rear wheel speeds, It is a helical gear (sp?) I have one in my 67 Pro street Camaro that has over 630 rwhp and no problems yet, but I dont run slicks...
You can get a locker as stated above, but I dont like them due to the incredible amount of noise they make. LSD is far more street friendly, I actually removed a locker to install the true-trac....
Just my .02

I am having issues with my truetrac as well, It happens when I may hard slow 90 degree turns (stop sign, etc) so I pulled the moser axles and I trimmed the passenger axle around 1/8 inch (now it doesn't seem to make noise when turning to the right, I didn't touch the left axle and it still pops when I turn left, I am thinking about trimming the left axle now.
I think its an axle issue butting up against the internals of the differential or other axle?
Anyone else mess with this?
