Default Stock 10-bolt rear end is LOUD when cruising; what could it be?

I know this is a very open-ended question and for an accurate diagnosis, it would have to be seen/heard, but just as a starting point, when I am in 6th gear cruising at just normal throttle, the rear end of my car is just obnoxiously loud with a whining noise. I do have some loud tires, but I can distinctly tell a difference between tire noise and rear-end noise. My car has 55k miles on it and I don't beat on the 10 bolt. It hasn't been altered in any way and is a 3.42 stock car. The car is currently up for the winter but I wanted to get this resolved before I got it out in the spring. Any help would be appreciated guys, thanks

I'm no expert but I'd say your rear end is on the way out. Mine was doing the same thing 2 months ago before it went boom while cruising on the highway. Might want to start saving some cash for a new one.

It could be bearings and it could also be the ring and pinion teeth Being shredded

Thanks guys, if I take it in to get looked at before it goes up in a pile of smoke, is this something that can be fixed or is it already too far gone if it is a ring/pinion or bearings?

i had the same problem, it was a horrible whining noise that happened at low RPMs mine was the carrier bearing thats was rubbing on the carrier housing witch caused my pinion gear to wear on my ring gear on the left side it wore it self a nice grove finally blew up on the street after i got my new tires.. but most likely its a bearing going bad causing your gears to wear funny

Better have it looked at. Mine howled like a jet engine spooling up, and it was the pinion bearing. The gears were ok, but I took it as an opportunity to swap in some 3.73's.

pinion bearing if it makes noise on deaccel, carrier bearings if it makes noise under crusing.

Is it a whine or growl?

Mine had a whine for a while, then it started clunking. Pulled the cover and found teeth broken off the ring gear.

A constant whine/wind sound. Almost sounds a lot like tire noise if you have noisy tires but I can definitely notice a difference if say I am going down a hill in neutral and then kick it in 6th gear. When it's in 6th gear, much louder.

Sounds like gear whine to me. I wouldn't worry about it.

Mine was loud as hell for a few months. Then this happened with cruise control set at 80 and no WOT blasts in weeks.
