True-Trac wear.. Failure soon?
Found this on a fluid change inspection. Unit is still working fine, no strange noises.
Should I remove this unit asap or just keep an eye on it? Truck is 4500 pounds and close to 800tq. Has about 25k miles on it and 40 or so drag passes.
Thanks for any input.

Only that Eaton won't warranty it and said it's not possible to rebuild it. Mine is still installed, but i'm sure is on it's death march. Last fluid change was ugly, i'm planning for a swap soon.

That is way too much power for the True Trac. I'd get it out of there asap. Bob

I have no where near 800ftlbs, only around 330 to the wheels in a 3500lb truck and my wear is just as bad. Any idea why it would wear so badly on such a mild application?

Does anyone think this wear could be caused by the axle tubes being slightly bent, causing the axle to direct an out of line positioning on the TrueTrac gear that is wearing?

A slightly bent axle should knock out the wheel bearings, before causing any other damage. Bob

May have some good news. Just got of the phone with a TrueTrac tech at Eaton. Sent him the picture and he seems to think everything is fine. He says there is going to be a much more noticeable amount of play with this gear driven differentials compared to your average clutch style differential. He told me five to ten degrees of play on the rear tire(on a lift spinning it until it catches to rotate the other tire in the opposite direction) is normal. And that the metal build up you see in the picture is fine.
Will someone tell me if this indeed the case?? I would love to hear yes he's right, send your new TT(replacement for this one^) back to Summit and wait 3-5 business days to receive your money, but I also would like to make SURE nothing is wrong with this differential for added security.
