Tired of being scared of the 7.5!!!
Ok here is the deal. I have a 98 T/A with abs only no traction control, which means i have a 3 channel(im pretty sure). Of course you can get the 12 bolt in either 3, or 4 channel, but I have a M6 and I really feel as tho the 12 bolt just isnt strong enough(from what ive read). Im a full bolt on car, but of course that will change ,so i want a really good foundation. The 9" would be my choice but i dont think they come with 3 channel. I think i can find an 8.8 with the 3 channel, but im just foggy on how strong it really is. I went to the track this weekend. Im tired of havin the thought in the back of my mind that my rear is gonna break. I WANT bullet proof!! I think the 8.8 will be an awesome rearend. Just give me a little feedback on how everything stacks up. thanks

If you have ABS & TCS, you have a 4-channel car. If you have ABS ONLY, you have a 3-channel car.
I have a 4-channel setup 8.8 rear for sale if you're interested. I think it's the way to go personally. Lighter than a 12 bolt & 9 inch, and will withstand the abuse. 8-9 second Mustangs have been running on 8.8's for 20 yrs.

I have 3 channel. I know that the 9" is the strongest. I really wanted to know how comparable the 8.8" was to the 9". The 12 bolt is a great peice no doubt, but for a m6 car that will be makin over 400+rwhp and a grabby clutch with some good tires, i just cant trust the 12 bolt(from what ive read). I personally have been in and around drag racing for a good while and I never see any 12 bolts in drag cars. I just want some non bias info on how strong the 8.8 is. The fact that at the track i see 5.0s running 10s on slicks and a manual tranny with the 8.8 says a WHOLE lot.

Dude, 12 bolts can hold a lot more than over 400HP. If you have it built with the right components, it will hold WAAAYYYY more than that!
I've heard of guys with 1200HP not breaking the 8.8, so I highly doubt you'll be able to break it!

I really think this will be one of the hardest decisions to make for my T/A. YOU KNOW WHAT? It wouldnt be such a big friggin deal if these rears didnt cost so much. I just like to get every opinion possible and look at every angle before i sign my first born child over and hand them a razor for my kidney. Of course im gonna pay the price and get whatever rear i end up seeing fit. still sucks tho. Ive thought about doin an 8.8 myself, but the labor seems pretty intense to fab one up. Im just tryin to filter thru all the stories of 12bolts popping. Havnt ever really heard anything bad about 8.8s. Like its been stated about the 5.0s running them forever. I dont know. You guys just keep feeding me more info. The more the better. thanks

He' a cool guy but that $1750.00 is the strip down version. There is a good wait for the delivery, I was going to get one but wanted it right away.
So I got a Strange 12 Bolt with Nittos and am happy with it.

I dont even think he has the 3 channel version either. So by the time i get the rest of my money and he comes out with the 3 channel the wait should be down. hopefully.

A Moser 12 bolt with all the goodies is comparible to a 8.8 with all the goodies. The 9 inch is a little stronger but it will cost you 3% more power than the 12 bolt. I've read sereval article where they compared the two and the 9 inch was less efficiant. Both are good for over 600 hp. I think the 9 was good for a 100 more ponies. Good luck. I bought my 12 bolt from Speed Inc and got all the upgrades for $2350. The 8.8 will cost as much if you get all the upgrades plus I think you can't get 33 slines in the 8.8. Do you really want a Ford part on your Chevy?

Speaking of drivetrain drain, what is the parasitic loss of engine flywheel horsepower to the rear wheels for an M6?

Im a whatever gets the job done type of guy. If i had to put daewoo axles in i would do it. I think one of the arguments with the 12bolt is that you cannot buy quality gears for it. Ive heard of them whining after a few hard launches. just hearsay tho. I didnt know extreme was offering the 3 channel. on their site it says they are working on it. maybe they havnt updated yet?

If you checked out the 12 bolt breakers thread, it looked to me like the only guys who broke theirs were running eaton posi's...I didnt see any spool breakers. I might be wrong...but it looks to me like the posi is the weak link in the 12 bolt

I've been through 4 ring and pinon sets in my moser 12 bolt in 7 thousand miles.
Full bolt on car with 10.5x15 et streets and a ceramic disc clutch. One set up by moser,
3 by gearheads garage,us gear says they don't build gears for quietness deeper than 3.73.The posi unit is ok the gears just get loud after a few launches.Going to try some motive gears next.
