Default 10 Bolt Whine Advice

I have a completely stock 02 Z28 vert A4. This is a road driven only car used a daily driver. I plan on doing basic bolt ons consisting of:

1. Magnflow cat back exhaust
2. SLP Flow Pac
3. LS1 Edit or similar tune
4. Eibach Springs and KYB shocks

The diff started whining the other day and I have found a differential overhal kit at RockAuto and think that it would solve the issues.

I don't want to replace it with a 9" or 12 bolt as i would have to ship that from the US to Oman which would be a huge cost.

I would also think that the 10 bolt should be fine for a normal road only use car.

the symptoms are:

1. a whine from about 40mph upwards, getting louder as the speed increases
2. this whine is only when I'm on the throttle and disappears when i lift off
3. there is a whine or graunching noise as the car slows to a halt, only at very low speed
4. there is a winding noise/ sensation while reversing

Am i likely to need to repair or replace more than the diff internals?

Any advice appreciated!

Default easy test

real easy test to figure it out.
get the car to 50 and put it in neutral let it go down to about 25 and see.
if t makes noise in neutral its only the diff.
if it makes noise in gear and in neutral boy i feel bad for ya.

Thanks Dually

Tried that and the whine disappears with no throttle applied and in neutral.

Any more ideas?

Cheers

Check the wheel bearings. Jack it up and try for up/down movement. Usually more of a "howl".

Doesn't seem to be that Vezer.. I think i'm just going to order that overhaul kit and see if that fixes it. It's not that expensive.

BTW, like your signature.. are you going for the F1 this weekend?

You'll have to at least put your gears in it. After you've gone through that, you would have been better off just rebuilding yours.

Manual rear has a 3.42 gear in it which would be a small upgrade over you 3.23 or 2.73 which ever one you have since the auto came with both. Once the gears are making noise you are not going to get them to stop. You will have to rebuild yours with a new ring and pinion and a good install kit. Motive Performance gear and Ratech install kits a good quality parts. You want good bearings in there, Timken, KOYO, or SKF are all good no Chinese crap.

That would be a performance gain for free. I stand corrected.
