best aftermarket ring and pinion brand?
hi everyone, i was hoping that my first post wouldn't be me asking a question but here I am. I have a 98 camaro putting 450 horses to the ground through a m6. Friday i was accelerating on a highway when my car started making a loud banging noise which I later discovered as being 5 teeth broke off the ring gear. i have every intention on getting a fab9 or s60 either this winter or next but just dont have the cash right now. im looking for a new ring and pinion on jegs and their are a few different manufacturers such as motive, richmond, and jegs house brand. is there any one that is better then the other? they are all priced pretty similarly. also i currently have 410s and was planning on switching to 373 because i dont really need the extra grunt off the line and would prefer to actually use first gear for more then 1 second. is it true that the 373 has a bigger pinion then the 410? thanks for any input.

generally strength will depend on the ratio as lower numeric ratios have bigger pinions so yes the 3.73 will be stronger. generally the richmonds, and motive orange box gears are a little noiser as they alloy they're made from is stronger and can cause whine. the quietest gears will either be AAM Motive blue box, or yukon brands

thanks for the replies. i just ordered the motive g8 series gears which should be the blue box ones. i also ordered a solid pinion spacer in place of the crush sleave and i found a used diff girdle on ebay tonight for 85 bucks, hopefully it adds some cheap insurance. hopefully this set up lasts longer then the last set. i pulled out yukon gear 411s today and i also noticed i have a new axle in one side. i'm hoping the old one didn't twist and thats why it was replaced.

The gears that were in my car were only in their for about 5 thousand miles and i had some noise on decel. I was pretty hard on it though so i don't really blame the gears, rather my driving habbits. i'll be taking it alot easier on this next set so maybe i can sell the rear end and put the money towards a fab9 or s60

sorry, the box color isn't as easy to remember as the g8 and gm in the part number. i seen you commented on someone elses post about the this and thats why I went with the g8 gears. thanks again for the help. im thinking i should take my 315s off when im not at the track, the diffy might appreciate that lol

I wanted 3.90s and since the only ones you could get were the orange boxes that's what I went with. I knew they may have a little decel whine but whatever. They installed great and had a nice pattern and preload but have a hint of whine on decel which is fine with me again it's expected with the harder alloy. Also the higher numerically you go the higher the chance that gears will make noise so your yukon a may have made noise just because they were 4.10s. Some will be quiet but it's not uncommon for them to make a little noise

i know this is off topic but are all the old ring gear bolts suppose to break when taking them out? it doesnt look like the little bit of threads that did come out had loctite on them.

Do yourself a big favor and get YUKON gears! They're the only ones that advertise their quiet operation, and you'd be hard pressed to break them (of course in ordinary situations, aside from the general 10 bolt weakness)
