Default 10 bolt replacement

I just blew out my 3.73 10 bolt last night and im looking at replacing it. Car is an 98 m6 with an auburn and no traction control. the local junkyard had a 3.42 10 bolt out of a 98 a4 without traction control. they want $200 for it.

few questions. will this axle bolt into my car without any issues.

if my gears are still good could i have the 3.73's put in the new rearend.

how do i tell if the gears are good. i took the cover off and they look fine. no teeth missing or anything but im a noob when it comes to axle internals.

and last thing is $200 a reasonable price for a used 10 bolt? i forgot to ask the milage but im assuming it's seen less abuse since its out of an auto. also they have 90 day guarantee.

let me know what you guys think. thanks in advance

not exactly sure. i opened up the cover and i couldnt see anything with missing teeth, but there were 4 or 5 teeth laying in the bottom and the magnet was covered with metal goo.

car drives fine, in a straight line. around turns it clunks and jerks and makes a terrible noise.

thanks btw for letting me know it fit!

one more question. he said it was a 3.42. but that wasnt a stock option for an auto. how can i confirm its a 3.42 when i buy it.

The junkyard diff will bolt right in but rather than swapping the whole diff you can just pull the carrier from the junkyard unit and have it bolted into your housing with your 3.73 gears. Otherwise you will be taking a step backwards with the autos gears. I believe there only a 3.23 or something like that

Just make sure it is a 3-channel rear. Both will bolt in and work but you would lose ABS if that craigslist rear is for a traction control car. Try to talk the guy down too. $450 is pretty high.

I went and got the axle last night, got home really late and had it all in by 5:30 am. lol i needed a ride to get to school today so i didnt stop til i was done.

anyway i love 4.10's! so much better than 3.73's. $450 was kinda high but i was wanting to upgrade to 4.10's anyway which would have been at least $200 and then i wouldve had to pay someone to put it in.

But anyway thanks for all of your help guys! appreciate it!
