Default Motive 4.10s and whine

Just got them installed with the motive kit and now it whines. Will this diminish with use or am I stuck with a whiney axle???

Thanks

Does it whine all the time? On the drive side? On the coast side? I put 3.90motives in my 10 bolt and it has always had a little whine on the coast side. I beat the **** out of the rear end for a little over 10,000 miles with no issues.

whines at cruising speed (50 mph-65 mph)...... Installer (very reputable speed shop) used lucas oil. Wonder if that has something to do with it?? Do not hear on coast side.

Very seldom do new gear sets get quieter with mileage, and the noise you are hearing may not reflect on anything the installer did. You can have two apparently identical gear sets both installed exactly the same, and one will end up being quieter than the other, as it can be just the cut of the gears. Performance gear sets are manufactured for strength, and they tend to produce a little noise as a result anyway. Having a torque arm on these cars doesn't help matters, as it tends to act as a stethoscope. How the new gears are broken in can make a big difference too. You really need to take it easy on the new gears for 500 miles. If someone pulls it out of the shop after a gear install, and takes it out to see if the car is faster with the new gears, you can expect added gear noise. Bob

Bob is absolutely correct about the torque arm. Ever since going to a relocation bracket which moves the TA from the trans tail to the chassis, I have heard every click, clack, scratch, and melody from the rear suspension/rear end. It drove me crazy at first but then I realized it is the cost you pay. Torque arms are a big culprit of noise in these cars.

Agreed 01ss....... If the whine does not subside (and it probably will not), just something I have to live with.

Post pics of the pattern. If the Motives are setup right you should have very little whine. Something else I have learned is that the tighter you run the backlash the quieter they will be. This is only if your pinion depth is right though. I just got done installing a set of Motive 3.89's in my 9 inch and they are the quietest gears I have had in it yet. I set my backlash to .006 and ended up with a picture perfect pattern. I have very little noise. Its all in the setup.
