Default Swapping gears in my S10 and my Fbody

So a few months ago I bought a 2003 5 speed s10 4 cylinder to stop DD'ing my 2002 WS6 TA 6 speed. I have been looking at a new rear for my TA but I want to try gear ratios out first like the 4.10 or 3.90 before I drop money on complete rear end. I also hate how highway commute with my s10 is 3K RPMs at only 70mph. Now I know GM put 4.10s in the 4 cylinder to help with how puny it was. But I don't tow anything in my truck and if I put anything in the bed its the trash because my dumb self forgot to set it out on the curb lol.

Is swapping my 3.42 into my 2003 s10 and my 4.10s into my fbody remotely possible? Seen a few others trying it but I wanted to be certain and what else will 1 need other than changing out the gears?

Forgive me I'm not that mechanically inclined in fact I just did heads and cam on my TA but I have yet to crack into internals on a rear end. Plus I gotta start somewhere.

the 4.10s from the truck will work in the firebird, the 3.42s' from the firebird will work in the truck. you're gonna have to have both rears apart at the same time so you won't have a vehicle to use.

The gears will interchange but your truck will suffer. that 4cyl.relies on the 4.10s to get it moving.. there is not very much difference between 4.10s and 3.90s. I had my 4.10s for a while and loved the acceleration until the broke lol.... 10-bolt SAGA

What's more a priority, sounds like getting the 4.10s' out of the truck because of high freeway rpm. If that's the case, pick up a S10 V6 truck rearend(it would have 3.73s') and do a complete rearend swap. Easier than swapping internals and a V6 rear should be rather inexpensive because it would be open carrier(non-posi). If you don't like the 3.73s' in the truck, then 3.42s' would've been a bigger dislike. If that works for you, then you have a vehicle to drive while you work on the firebird.

^^^That's good advise. The factory 4.10s you have are a quality gearset made by AAM, I used them when I put 4.10s in my 10 bolt, they were quiet like OEM should be.

you cannot just swap complete rear ends from the truck to the f-body simply because the truck does not have torque arm provisions you have to swap the internals.

Not talking about swapping complete rearends in the original post, just the gearset.

Yeah I decided against it after reading a few post on s10forums of those who did it put 3.42's in the 4 banger. The lowest I can go is 3.73's. The regular cab actually got 3.73's but the extended cab received 4.10's because of the extra cab weight. So I have been looking around in the junkyard and they want me to take the whole rear end for $150+ from a regular cab. Better off just buying 4.10's from ws6store. It would have been nice if my 4 banger could have supported it but I don't feel like getting honked at at the stop lights lol.
