10 Bolt axle movement
Ive been driving my car around the neighborhood since its not registered yet. Ive never noticed this before but when i am driving the rear end clunks like a loose wheel. So i took off my wheel and discover the axl has in and out movement. It is noticeable on both sides. Ive never heard it before. This is on a 10 bolt. Worn parts or normal?

I was also wondering just how much end play do are the c clip axles supposed to have (I noticed this same thing, and my c clips were just replaced last year along with new axle end bearings and seals).

My stock rear end makes clunk/rattling noises due to excess play in the axles. Mine with the brakes on and in gear will spin about an inch or two and will move in and out from the axle. My bearings are shot, but I won't fix them and will be replacing with a 9" rear end when I can. My rear end could come apart at any time.

In and out is NOT a function of bearings or posi track wear. Its a set distance from the axle flange end to the c clip groove. No more, no less. It cannot increase or decrease with age as its not related to controlled by wearable parts. Thats what OP is asking about.

Not to be confused with the in and out movement - only the noise

Yes they move, but "HOW MUCH" they move is what determines if the rear end is at fault and/or going bad.

Its the left to right movement on mine thats excess. My rear end makes noise. I spent a whole day looking over the entire rear suspension until the rear end was identified as the culprit.

Im really not following you here buddy. Did you measure the movement? Did you find a specified acceptable range in some GM manual somewhere? You're movement exceeded this? Did someone who has years and years of rear end experience tell you it was excessive? Are you just guessing? You're not really telling us anything except you believe yourself to be right. Axles move, when moved by hand they clunk, however even then they are quiet when driving. Most if not all clunks you may hear while driving are not them! Its NORMAL. If you have an "excessive" amount of play please tell us how much and where exactly it was coming from or stop arguing.

Are you saying your entire rear axle is drifting side to side? Or are you saying the axle shafts are moving in and out

If your car has the Torsen carrier the noise you are hearing is most likely the internal worm gears interacting. I use 75-140 in mine and cuts the noise in half. I think you are talking about knocking clunking noise you hear coasting around 20 mph and less as you turn the wheel?
