Default What gears are in my 10 bolt?

I just put in a used 10 bolt to replace the broken one I had. I bought it from a salvage yard and I told them it had to have 3.42's, but I think I got the shaft as it feels really sluggish compared to the 4.10's I used to have . Is there a way to find out the ratio in the rear? ex. rotating the wheel/driveshaft, or maybe a tag or markings on the rear?

Jack up the rear and spin the tire one full spin. Count the rotations on the driveshaft. You could spin the tire 10 times and divide for better accuracy if you can't figure between a 3.42 and a 3.23. I don't remember if the gear ratio is stamped anywhere on the 10 bolt or cover.

Actually, because of the summing diff, you need to jack up just one wheel and spin it 20 times. Count the number of driveshaft revolutions and divide by 10.

You mean jack up one tire and spin drive shaft enough to spin tire one rev and multiply drive shaft revs needed by two to get ratio. There is no need to do the 10 spin thing as this is not rocket science and there are only a few ratios it can be. If you want a litle more precision spin drive shaft for two tire revs and multiply driveshaft revs by 4 to get raitio.

Got a 3.23. Oh well, at least it's a 3 series carrier. I guess I'll be swapping out to 4.10's again soon. These gears make the car feel like a slug!

There is a carrier break between 3.08 and 3.42 and the catalog is not too clear which carrier the 3.23 is on. They show thick and thin gears for both carriers for 3.42 through 4.56 but 3.23 or taller only have one part number which tends to suggest it is not a 3 series carrier. For what it is worth...

I believe all stock 3.23 gears are a 3-series carrier. I think the only time you have a 2 series is if the car had 2.73's stock.

By my Yukon catalog 2.73 and 3.08 are for sure on a 2 series and a 3.42 is for sure a 3 series but it tends to suggest the a 3.23 is a 2 series gear because all gear ratios of 3.42 and above are listed in thick and thin for 2 and 3 series carriers.

3.23 are 3 series. They come stock in SS's and WS6's and they can easily be upgraded to 3.42+ with just a gear swap.
