Default another 2.73 gear change thread

What should i go with? my car is pretty much stock accept for very minor boltons, a stall may be in the near future, and i'd like a gear that i could benefit from, but would also be good as a daily driver. I do mostly city driving but that may change within the next year, so i can't afford to rev extremely high on the highway.

I'd like to know you guys' mileages, times and what's best for the SOTP factor.

Thanks!

After my 3.73s, I run like 2600 rpm at 70, and still get 20+ on the highway.

are there any benifits over running 3.42 over 3.73s? or vice versa?

Or just whichever's cheapest? I've heard the mileage gains with 3.42s are minimal compaired to 3.73s.

Well since you said stall Im assuming you have an auto.... so I would pick 3.73s. I ran 3.89s in my car and it wasnt bad at all.

I recently changed my gears to 3.73's and they are great. My car came with the granny 2.73's and they sucked. My gas mileage has improved as well.

my 273 - 373 swap got me 1 mph and .2 et in the 1/4. mileage should be up in town (driving like grandma) and down on the highway. my 273s got 32 mpg on the highway, i know there's no way that my 373s would even be close.

I went to 3.42's and still get 25+ on the highway.

Going from a 2.73 to a 3.42 dropped my top MPH from 162 to about 135 though.

I am running a 3500 stall and 3.73 and loving it. it's a waste going anything under 3.73, because for the money spent, you won't feel hardly anything out of it

I would say a nice torque converter and stay with 2.73's or 3.23's

With a ~3500 stall my 1/4 mile improved none going from the 2.73's to the 3.73's, but maybe my torque converter just liked the 2.73 gears.

3.42 would be a good gear if you think you'll be on the highway a fair amount. Going to 3.73s will be having your OD go out on you now.

Better to do the stall first and then see if you need gears.

Why would the OD go out?

It was a way to visualize what it would be like to drive on the highway with 3.73s. If he puts in 3.73, he have a final drive ratio of 2.6 (3.73 x .7). Right now if OD didn't work he would use 3rd gear, giving him a drive ratio of 2.73 (1.0 x 2.73). Thus if you have 2.73s you can drive on the highway in 3rd and see if you really like turning that level of rpm. It's fine for short drives in the city, but I find it a bit high for long drives.

I gotcha, you had me worried that my OD was gonna burn up from the higher rpm's or something.
