Default Want 4.10's, don't want noise...

I'm getting ready to install 4.10 gears in my 10-bolt. I've heard some 4.10's make a lot more noise that others... Can anyone advise on the quietest gears???

GM gears I hear are quiet, but arent strong. I have Richmonds and they are far from quiet, I wouldnt recommend them to you. Dont know of any others..

Cool, thanks. I'm beginning to feel like the SLP Poster Boy, though... ...look at my mods. Since it's a rag top, I'm going to opt for quiet (it's already noisy enough w/Loudmouth and LT's, but hey, I'm not complaining); gears are relatively cheap, even if a tow from the track ain't.

A lot of times the reason the rear whines is because of the way they are set up. I'm not saying that some gears are not better than others but a properly set up rear will make less noise. A lot of people like the GM/Motive gears. No matter which set up you go with make sure you have them set up properly.

FINALLY!!!

I can't believe how many of us don't take into consideration that the ring/pinion has to be properly aligned to get the correct wear pattern and thus optimum strength with minimal noise. If they're set up right, you'll have a quiet gearset, PERIOD. One brand may be a little louder than the other, but it won't be enough to worry about.

Get them done right and you'll be fine! Don't hesitate to ask around and find a good reputible shop. I made the mistake of going with the much cheaper shop and now after 2K miles the rear needs to be rebuilt again!

Those that are set-up correctly are the quietest..... no matter what brand. But, OEM, USGear and Precision have been my choice for 15+ years.

I still stand behind Richmond. I have had 8 sets put in different cars of mine were quiet and worry free(because they were set up and BROKEN IN properly). However, I had a set set up for a good friend of mine at the same place I go to and his whined but the installer said they would a little because the pattern wouldnt perfect and we were in a crunch to get the car going so we didnt get another set to try. He later put motives in and they were quiet. 8 out of 9 aint bad though lol.

My gm 3.73's make a little noise <10 mph and just a bit right around 40. Quiet the rest of the time.

What everyone has said about the proper setup is the most important factor in having quiet gears. The factory GM 4.10s with the said proper setup will probably be the quietest. That being said, I would be willing to give up a little quiet for a stronger 10 bolt! (if any of the aftermarket gearsets are in fact measureably stronger than the GMs)

I'm told Yukon gears are about 40% stronger but cant back that up. I went with Yukon 3.73s. you shouldnt hear much from them if you hav a loud exaust anyways just my .02

Everything said about quality install is correct. That being said, it has been proven over and over again, that all, not some, but ALL 4.10 gears will make noise.

ALL. No exception.

Of course, a professional well done install means less noise, but there is still noise. The difference, and the thing most don't take into account, is that with low noise 4.10 gears the sound is covered by your exhaust. Therefore, it sounds as if nothing is eminating from the axle, but in truth, it is.

I have full exhaust from front to back, as well as a large cam, heads, and every bolt on you can get.

When I got my 4.10 gears, which were installed by a professional drivetrain shop, I could hear a little sound coming from the gears. At that time, I only had cat-back, lid, baffle and shifter. Turning on the radio would drown out what little gear whine I could hear.

After I got my second cam, 5.3L heads, N20, LT's and SPEC Stage 3, all of the other sounds completely washed out the gear noise. I don't hear it anymore.

All that said and one thing remains true... 4.10 gears are helluva lot of fun. So much power up top. Good times.

I have probably installed 1200+ 4.10/4.11 gear sets from all manufacturers..... in the past 15+ years..... and I can prove that statement completely speculitive and incorrect by all means.
