new strange 12 bolt, unbearable howling on decel.
rear is about 4 months old, and i went through the break in. it is a spool with 4:30 gears. i took it to the track, and after every run it got louder, only on decel. my best 60' was 1.60, nothing that i think would cause problems. it was so loud on my last run that i was afraid to drive it home. u-joints seem fine. any suggestions?

thats why i bought an s60. too many people are having issues with this in the 12 bolts. little did i know i would have one on the s60 prior to even going wot. i think the general consensous seems to be that they are getting deflection. id search this because there have been hundreds of posts about it.

I had the same problem it was the pinion bearing.Call strange and give them your zip code they will find you a shop near you. Let them fix it before it gets worse. Also remove the drivshaft and check the pinion nut make sure it's not walking out on you.If it's loose take it off and put loctite on it before you tighten it.

So did you drive it home? Has it quieted down at all since then?

I think if you drive it around more, it will quiet down. More than likely you'll notice it has gotten louder again after the next time you race it.
When I bought my car, I drove it back home 1600 miles. The rear end was loud the whole time, especially after being on the road for eight hours a day. To top it off, it was blowing gear oil out of the sintered brass filter on top of the housing, but I had no idea where it was coming from at the time. I was shittin twinkies being so far away from home with a car I had just bought. I pulled the cover off when I got home and the gears looked perfect.
Since they don't recommend running synthetic with the Auburn posi, I run two quarts of Lucas 85w-140 and one quart of the Lucas oil stabilizer. I took out the vent from the top of the housing, screwed in a 1/8" pipe hose barb, and ran a short hose with a filter on top mounted to the chassis to prevent fluid from blowing out. This seemed to quiet down the howling slightly.
I don't blame you if you want to pull the cover for peace of mind. I don't know if you've searched or not, there are quite a few threads about the noise of the 12-bolt. Some people have cured the problem by changing the gears, or re-installing them. Others seem to have the problem come right back again. Even though i'm stubborn and don't want to, i've just come to terms, cringe, and deal with it.
