Default Can anything quiet down a moser 9inch?

Im running a moser 9inch with a spool and 411 gear ratio. The whine on the high way is pretty brutal. Can i put thiker diff oil in to quiet it down or is this just the trade off of a bullet proof rear end?

Pretty much the nature of the beast....12 bolt, 9 inch...some are more noisy than others. The only solution would be a new gear set/bearings and those would probably make noise as well also after some track time.

To lessen the noise you can always go back to a stock stamped steel torque arm...that cuts out a good 50% at least.

Yes indeed, the much needed aftermarket torque arms act as a stethescope. Bob

You can try having the gears re-set. I had to do that with mine. Most of the time the noise can be improved. Performance gears will always have some whine though. Mine's not noticable with the stereo on at what I would call a normal volume.

if its while you're cruising, then get the gears setup by someone that knows what they're doing.

if its only on decel, and its not HOWLING like mad, then its the nature of the gears...

theres always some noise, but it shouldnt be overpowering...

Do aftermarket tranny mounted ones do this as well?

Fresh gear set up PROPERLY and a solid pinion spacer has worked well for me after several other gear swaps using a traditional crush sleeve.

Basically if you want your rear quiet you need to send your center section to Scott @ DLS to get it setup CORRECTLY, or do what I did and order a brand new center section from Scott so he can use the parts he likes to use in his setups and it will be dead quiet. I changed out my center sections 3-4 days ago, broke it in, same EXACT setup as my other center section from Moser. It is a tru-trac, 31 spline, and 4.11's. This thing is dead quiet, I haven't heard a sound from the thing so I am extremely stoked and very happy with this decision. Scott is an awesome guy and if you can afford 2 weeks of down time to allow for shipping to and from him, he can more then likely fix your center section, I just couldn't deal with any down time because it's my only car.

I was going to say the same thing. If it's howling then it's not setup properly. I had this moron named Sal in california setup my Moser initially... He built the whole center section. 3.70 gears, detroit locker, billet pinion support, etc.... As soon as I put it in and took off and got to cruise the gears were HOWLING!!! I mean it was this loud whine that had to be toned down by cranking the radio. At highway speeds it was annoying to say the least.....

I take it back to him and he gives me this "Well you are running Richmond Race cut gears and they will all whine like that" spiel.... So i'm thinking ok whatever... i get a couple of opinions and then find out about a guy local to me that builds rearends out of his garage... He comes highly recommended by guys in the area that are running 7 and 8 second doorslammers... So I take out the center section and drop it off with a brand new set of 3.89's (Richmond "racecut" gears) and a rebuild kit with new bearings, crush sleeve, etc.... he gives me the center section back about 5 days later looking beautiful.... drop it in, drive it.... haven't heard it since.... That was 5 years ago... Still hasn't made a sound.... people that tell you that gears whine are covering up their lack of ability at setting backlash....
