Default gear whine????

ok i have a 97 z with an auto trans and richmond 3.73's in the rear with and auburn posi....well the gears whine around 40mph which drives me insane because of the fact thats the speed i drive everytime im in town...well anyway i asked the guy if he could fix it and he said he can't....he said the richmonds are almost impossible to stop from whining....is this true? do you guess think i could take it somewhere else and get rid of that whine?

Is it impossible to have quiet Richmonds ?? ... No, its not impossible.

Can you fix the whine ?? ... Not really. You could re-set them, but that is going to be hit or miss too. Once they have been heat cycled and have had a few miles on them, its near impossible after they have been work hardend. You could start by changing out to a straight weight 140 gear lube... but... there is no much else you can do.

If you found the right guy... he might be able to quiet them down, but I doubt they will become silent. The biggest problem is finding that one guy that knows and understands the black art of setting up a quiet set of gears. One hint... he'll be the guy that will split hairs over a 0.0005 to 0.001" pinion depth change before he is satified.

Richmonds are known to whine. Just open up the exhaust a little more or turn up the radio. That is the only way to quiet the down.

I have Richmonds in mine and they whine, but I have dumped oval mufflers off of the header collectors, so it drowns it out pretty good. As long as they aren't clunking or grinding, you'll be okay.

2.5 qts is required... so 3 would do the trick.

No it wont harm the transmission.

And... 140wt can help... but I wouldnt expect it to completely solve the issue. It will help though.
