Default Rear end or u-joints?

I have a 99 trans am (4l60e),323,worm gear style posi unit,104k.It makes a steady clunking noise on decell and sharp turns, but not while accell, even lightly.Changed outer wheel bearings,Diff bearings looked fine the ring and pinion are gm and appear to have alot of marking compound on them. With the rear jacked up and tcr off no noise can be heard.Just had a baby and on a budget.need suggestions.

I'd pull the driveshaft and see if the u joints are shot. Make sure the torque arm is not starting to bend into two as well, which can cause the problem you described. There is a picture here of what can happen. http://www.exoticperformanceplus.com...php?service=58 Bob

The noise you are hearing is completely normal, save your time and money for something else.

The Torsens normally have a "rocks in a box" sound on decelleration/coast down. But I would check all of the other things that were suggested anyway, just to be sure.

Climb under the car and grab the driveshaft with two hands. Move it back anf forth. You will be able to feel the U-joints if they are bad.

Bad u-joints clunk when you lift off the gas.

Wow!!! If I was you I would see if my lock-up converter is releasing quick enough. If the rear end is tight and the mount is not broken, just for ***** and grins check it out. With that kind of mileage and the atf hasn't been changed in a while, the detergents in the atf are gone and you could get clunking because of sticky solenoids or valves in the valvebody. No additives are required! PS, the only way to correctly check u-joints is to remove the shaft. And just keep driving that trans or related part into the ground. Cheap and lazy=disaster down the road. No insult intended. We love those kind of customers! $$$ca-ching.
