Default How much hp will a stock driveshaft handle?

I'll be ordering a 9 inch soon, but wondering if i'll need a new driveshaft too or if i'll be ok with the stock one. Any recommendations?

HP does not kill the driveshaft. Hooking hard will. What tire, gear, suspension, and HP level do you have?

The car will have a 9 inch with 4.11 gears, running (as of right now) 275 m/t dr's. Suspension is basic lca's, phr, sfc's and also Qa1 shocks. My car put down 418hp on a mustang dyno.

I'm interested to know this also, but I'm pretty we'll both be needing a stronger drive shaft. I plan on getting a heavy duty one with my 9", 4.11 gears, MT Street Radials. We'll be able to launch from really high RPM's which will kill the stock drive shaft at 400+ torque. Of course my car has an aluminum drive shaft stock. I'm not sure about yours.

Also curious, I was coming on to post the same thing. I'm a mostly stock suspension with mods in sig and plan on running ET streets or something real sticky, will I need a new DS?

For the money, it's tough not to suggest a new driveshaft when you're doing a beefed up rear end. A $400 driveshaft can save you hundreds of extra dollars if you break the stocker and it tears the bottom of the car up - or worse.

Buy a new driveshaft and sell your stocker to an LT1 guy.

Well just to give you an idea, before the mods: Stock HP, Rear, Clutch...... everything 100% stock on a set of BFG KDW's. I got the tires hot enough and launched on some new blacktop 3 blocks from my house. Peeled it like an apple and ended up pushing it the whole way home. So yes, its not the HP.....its all how you hook my friend.

Don't forget... Wheel hop will kill a stock DS with ease as well. I vote that Nobody should run a stock DS after they change to a 12 bolt or 9"

Just curious, why would an LT1 guy need my old driveshaft?

As did mine... Wonder why though... you wouldn't think a 00 3.8 bird would need one...

Thinking about aluminum though... take out some vibration at upper highway speeds..

That is exactly why we sell so many of the PST 3.5" alum driveshafts, rated at 1000 hp. Lifetime warranty and 10 years on the u joints. Bob

Ok, i'm going to order one but have a issue. I ordered my rear with a 1350 yoke but the new 1350 u joint wouldn't fit. Luckily I had another stocker and it fit like a glove, so does that mean I have a 1310 yoke? Trying to figure out for ordering purposes... Thanks.

Nice looking piece, but it says that it weights 2.5 (something like that) lbs more than the stocker... Is it talking about the aluminum stocker?

Also, it says that the u-joint won't mate up to the 10bolt.. What will it mate up to without a conversion kit from Napa? And any idea how much the conversion kit is?

Thanks
Addison

I just bought a 9 inch with a 4.56 gear and I need a new drive shaft, if I bought the PST 3.5 will I be able to launch with slicks around 3-4000 rpms and not break the drive shaft?
