Default Who's riding 4.10's with stock 10 Bolt??? Please chime in...

Before I start, just want to say that I did a lot of searching and reading of old posts. There is so much information to sift through. Can't seem to find what I am looking for though (most likely user error---->me).

Been thinking about going to the 4.10's for my M6. Don't have the $$$ to spend on a 12 Bolt or 9" rearend at the moment ($2500 or so??). I know the 10 Bolt is "crap", just wondering how "crappy" it actually is with 4.10's.

My car is a street car that doesn't see much track. Sitting on 18" Rears and 17" Fronts with street tires.

Are the 4.10's a bad idea with the 10 Bolt? Should I forget about gears until I can replace my rearend?

I love my 4.10 and wouldnt go any other way... just did 4 track runs (first time) and i've had these gears for over 8 months, person before me had the rear-end installed in a different car for over a year... seems to be running good to me

4.10s is the only way to go in a 6 speed car. just my opinion though...

Even with the stock 10 Bolt I should go for the 4.10's ??? That seems to be what I am hearing so far...

I'll just put it this way my 10 bolt hated the 4.10's and DR's. I didn't even move off the line at the track and my posi was broke. (it was a new aburn) got it back together and went to the track later on and bam there went the axle and posi. I was launching around 3000 to 2500RPM.

A friend of mine thats on here also broke his 10 bolt more than once and is now rockin a 9" because of 4.10s. I'm rockin a Dana 60 and love it!!!!

So you don't have the money for a 12 bolt 9" or Dana 60 well putting in the 4.10's might make you have to buy one of them. very soon. just my .02 cents

I didnt go to the track very much either.

resist the temptation. buy a better rear.

I've thought about this too and I keep coming to the conclusion of waiting and saving up for a 9". why? because lets say you put in those 4.10's have some fun then uh-oh there goes the rear....... = more money out of your pocket

although knowing myself, I will end up getting frustated trying to save up and just order the gears lol.

I was going to say the same thing, don't waiste your coin on that 10 bolt, just slowly put together a 9", all you'll be doing is throwing your $$$ away, its one thing to have a spare or 2 10 bolts as back ups that you inharited or got on the cheap,but to put nice new parts in it just to have them shatter soon isn't worth it, i know this isn't something you want to hear, but having a 6sp., your playing with fire, because all you be doing is limiting your lauches & looseing ET to baby that 10 bolt, doesn't make sence to me, just bight the bullet & start throwing a 9" together, i'm shure i'm broker then you (& most lol), but i'm finding the funds to get my 9" in.

like stated above save your money! I had to pull a loan out just to get my Dana because when my 10 bolt broke it was gone and I had to have the car running because it's my DD.

i wouldnt put 4.20's in until youre full bolt on and break your 10 bolt. Than get a 12 bolt or a 9" and you get to choose what gears you want whe nyou buy it so it would be a waste to go with 4.10's on a 10 bolt when it'll just eat it up when it breaks. That's just my .02

Good information. This is my DD and like I stated above will see little to no track. With this being said, I don't plan on launching hard (or harder than I need to on the street). It seems mostly (not always) that the stock 10 Bolt takes a beating on the strip with drag radials. I will be riding on street tires with no tacky track. Granted the 10 Bolt is weak, but if I'm just street driving with no hard digs, will it hold up?

BTW, I am not putting any more $$$ into my 10 Bolt. It is stock and will eventually be replaced, just not sure when due to the cost and labor of putting the rearend in.

I have a 10 bolt with 4.10s and an M6.
This has held up to > 90K street miles on street tires mainly, as well as ~50 passes on Nitto DRs (I know they are not the stickiest thing out there), most of them at a really sticky track (Atco).

But as most on here would say I have been VERY LUCKY, and an exception to the 'rule' in this regard!!!

yep for a dd w/ little to no track time . just a car to run around on and hit a few stop lights the 10 bolt would be fine . i give mine hell w/ 4.10's and havent had a problem w/ the 10 bolt since i put the TA cover on, and cost ALOT LESS than a 9" or DANA 60. figure how many 10 bolts you could rebuild with the cost of a 9"(quite a few)

her are my 4.10's, u can c how bad the teeth are chipped , they lasted about 30k in my 10bolt with no drag radials or track passes.....i would go with a stronger and more durable gear for ur stock rear if ur not gnna put in aftermarket rear in.....3.73's would b better for a stock rear

just wondering but from the sound of it your not really going to be racing it so why even put 4.10's in it?

Just want to get through the dead zone in my RPM's quicker and into the power band. My car wants to bog down and accelerate slow at lower RPM's. Also, everyone seems to love the 4.10's in M6's, accelerates a little quicker and gets through the dead zones. I have never played around with gears before, so I am just trying to get a good idea of what they are all about and what they actually do.

I had them in my 10 bolt for a year and half full of 1/4 mile passes. Prolly over 200 with the gears inside it. Went a recorded best of 1.45 many many times... all were in 1.4-1.5 range.

Went to hit the hit the 150 shot off the line and it just ripped through the ring gear. Just not strong enough. the car hooked hard and just ate right through the ring gear. pretty cool.

just make sure to use stronger bolt that hold the ring gear and the other 6 or either 8 bolts (cant remember)that hold everything to the diff. itself. i rung off two of the diff. bolts and the heads of them dropped down into the bottom of the housing and the ring gear picked them up and drug them up the rear end cover which caused a gash 1/2" wide pretty much all the way up the cover rear end grease went everywhere

Say you spend 300$ on getting them/installed, If your rear end breaks and you decide to replace them again with 4.11's thats 600$, those 600$ could have put you that much closer to a 12 bolt/9 inch
