Question 8.8" Ford Rear in 98-02 F-Body Possible???

me and a local performance shop have been talking of building a 8.8" rear end to work with my 02 SS b/c it will be alot less expensive (b/c money is pretty tight) but should be better than a 12 bolt...

i cant seem to find any good deals on a used 12 bolt or 9" and i cant afford a new one so this seems to be the best alternative since building the 10 bolt has been proving pointless.

has anyone done this?

any bad things about trying this?

does anyone have pics of a 8.8 in a 98-02 fbody?

opinions please.....................

Search 8.8 and you'll see it's been done; a lot have a problem with the torque arm mount. There are a few good priced 12 bolts in the classified section, except the guy lives in IN. I would just pay the extra money and get a 9", 12 bolt, or S60.

It's been done and it works. All the bad rep comes from welding a torque arm mount to the housing. Welding carbon steel to cast iron is a hit and miss proposition even if the proper welding procedures are followed. The one i have has a torque arm mount bolted to the rear end and eliminates the biggest problem with these setups. the 8.8 is stronger than a 12 bolt. and doesnt have the whine after a few hard launches. it's strength is close to that of a 9" but lighter and doesnt eat up as much power. Before i bought mine i asked a lot of people who ran this rear almost all failures were related to the welds. plus it was a lot cheaper than a 12 bolt

I am just about done making mine, All I have left is to finish my ladder bar setup. I switched from a torque arm to a pete z-bar style setup. I decided that playing master fabricator with 1/2" plate was not going to happen without a plasma or a cutting torch, and I have neither. That and my torque arm is subframe mounted and made running a streetable exhaust nearly impossible. Killed two birds with one stone, but I shouldn't speak yet as it has yet to be tried out.

This is it after sleeving and welding the tubes on a few months ago. It's now I set up but today I cut off my upper ladder bar brackets because I wasn't happy with them. I will be redoing them later this week.

I work at prominently Mustang performance shop so when I went to put a rear in mine I just grabbed a spare housing from out back and built it...Its still holding together.
