Default 3:73 gears

I currently have 2:73 gears in my car and was considering going w/ some 3:73 gears. I'm just wondering if it'd be worth the expense of the gears, install kit, oil and paying someone to install them. I was considering upgrading to a 12 bolt but I don't want to spend $2k + for a new rear right now when I don't need it. I plan on doing a stall soon also so I would just get them both adjusted for on the tune.

I would do it. Your almost better off buying a new rear with gears installed, I've seen low mileage 10 bolts with 3:73's for around $200. That way you would have a spare anyway. With an Automatic, you have less of a chance for the 10 bolt to break. I have 3:73's and a 3600 stall, and they took off around an entire second.

So you think I should go ahead and replace the gears in my rear or look for a used 10 bolt rearend for cheap? I'm not sure how hard it'd be or costly to replace the entire rearend.

Well that's your call. Rear end swap wasn't hard i did it myself when I did my tranny swap, only took a few hours. I spent $200 total, but my rear end was junk that's why I replaced it. Just giving you an idea, you can get some gears for under $100, but I would assume most rear end shops will charge over $100 to do the swap.

I have the series 2 carrier and everywhere I look almost no one has them (most seem to be series 3), I think Strange carries them but they're like $200 or more.

Also, how important is the rearend gearing when combined w/ a stall? I was considering a 3800-4000 stall so I want to make sure they both work well together.

Go with the gears..if you are not launching at 4,000+ rpm you should be fine.

You can install the gears yourself if you have the proper tools to do the setup. Key is taking your time and making sure you do not cut corners. We have all the parts and the tools you would need to do the job. Let me know if we can help.

LOL..dont listen to this guy about buying a new rear. I have 3.73 on my 10 bolt with full bolt on and it's holding up great with me beating on it. Spending the money on a new rear would be a waste. Some people on here..

I think what 98WsSick was implying is that a person could get a 10 bolt w/3.73s already installed cheaper than buying gears/install kit for their existing 10 bolt and paying someone to put them in.
The only way it would be cheaper for someone to put a different gear setup in their existing 10 bolt is if:
1. They got the gears used.
2. They have the requisite tools/knowledge to do the gear install themselves.

Well I don't have the tools nor the know how but can you get me a price on some 2 series gears and everything else I'd need for the install?

Are you serious buddy? Apparently you can't read. I was saying gear installs are not cheap and your almost better off buying a new rear end with gears installed. I've seen freshly rebuilt 10 bolts with gears sell for $200. I paid $200for my rear with gears and changed it myself, which was probably easier than doing the gears in my stock rear end. Plus it would give you a spare that you could probably sell and get your money back! So screw you!

Thank you, lol. You understand what i'm saying. But ya if you can find someone to do the gear install cheap, go for it! I'm just telling you my opinion.

I wish I would have gone this route. I did a gear swap/new diff. it lasted about 2000 miles. My Midwest 9 should be done soon.
