Stop me from trading my 2000 Z28 Convertible for a 97 Boxster
May sound nuts, but the guy offered me a boxster and I gave him a shot, heres the story:
2000 Z28 vert M6 with 176k miles. In great shape inside and out. Has the RS package with Hurst short shifter, all stock and original. Just about nothing has been replaced other than shocks and clutch. Still runs pretty strong from what I can tell.
1997 Boxster 2.5L 5 Speed with only 85k miles. I have always been a big Porsche fan, just never thought I could afford one this early, (turning 20 this month). The exterior is PERFECT. Interior, "Boxster red" which is kind of ugly and the driver seat is pretty worn. Otherwise the car is amazing and is sitting on the new Carrera 19" rims. New tires, new (upgraded Carrera) brakes, and has all the original maintenance records, owners manual, tool kit, and car cover. 205hp wasn't much fun, but man when we hit those turns, I have NEVER felt a car handle like this.
Any advice on why I shouldn't go through with this?
keep in mind I am probably transferring next fall so I wouldnt have the car for very long and should be able to avoid any and all maintenance.

Well,....
Sounds like the only thing that impresses you is the handling, since acceleration is lacking. A better option may be to look at suspension mods for your Z28; then you'll still have LS1 power with drastically improved handling.

If you want a fun car like the Porsche, look into a Miata or S2000. Boxsters are junk IMO, cars for people that want to make other people think they're rich because they have a Porsche. And like everyone else said, have fun fixing everything that breaks and getting it worked on at a Porsche dealer. Just because you can buy a car doesn't mean you can really afford to own it. Save up until you can buy a REAL Porsche if you really like them.

I am into 911's mostly but I believe that the pre-2000 model year Boxsters have a serious engine issue (sleeves??) that is very expensive to repair. Be very careful, and if buying a Boxster, try to buy model year 2000 or newer. If you want a roadster, BMW made 6 cylinder Z3 models in the late 90's that are very reliable and handle equal or better than the Boxster. (avoid the 4 cylinder Z3 due to performance). They are not expensive, even the lower mileage ones can be had for under $10,000-$12,000. I own a 2002 with the 3.0L that puts out 225 HP. It is incredible and the handling is superb, as good as a factory 911. That's about as good as it gets without modifications.

This.
Boxters are slow piles of overpriced junk IMO. If someone gave me one for free I would drive it...all the way to the nearest dealer to trade. I might wear a bag over my head too.

I'm going to guess from the "they're junk" comments that most people here have never actually owned a boxter or even riden.
My mom has one from the late 90s, '99 I think. Never broke down, and very little maintenance. Not saying none of them break down, but it's been more reliable than any of the 4 f-body's I've owned (trans hasn't broke, rear end isn't glass, window motors haven't failed, etc). But if it does break it's goinng to be pricey to get it fixed, like any Porsche.
Boxsters are a lot of things, including a car with a chick stereotype, but it is no where close to junk. That 200 some horsepower comes on strong in the mid and upper RPM range and pulls smooth which makes it a blast to ride hard in the twisty's. My uncle had a Z3 from about the same year and it didn't feel near as solid as the Boxster. Sure, it doesn't have LS1 power, but it will hold and accelerate out of a turn better than any f-body unless you've dumped thousands into the suspension.
BTW, is the guy offering to trade you straight up for the Z28?? I'd trade a 90s boxster for a 178k mile f-body anyday, you could sell it and come out way on top.

The Boxster isn't junk by any means, but if it does break, like others say it will be expensive to repair. Personally, I wouldn't want a Boxster not so much because of the "chick car" implications but, I dunno, I just don't like it; maybe it's the lack of thrust-not sure. The title of your thread says you're not too crazy about it either so I'd pass...

I was expecting to see..........03 Cobra
BUT instead I somehow see 97 Boxster. There must be a typo. Did your little brother log onto your account? This is a joke-
If you did that, we, at LS1tech would be under obligation to assemble the STTF (stupid trade task force) and go beat you with a sack of canned green beans. Then post your bloody pic on Face Book-
*Did I go too far there?
