I'm sure the Camaro was similar but according to The Standard Catalog of Firebird by J Gunnell, just to give some actual shipping weights, the weights do change year to year in some instances, but here are a few examples: the 1968 Firebird 2 dr sport coupe 350 was 3061 lbs, the 1977 Firebird (had 3 V8 options) with the 5.0L was 3,411 lbs, the 5.7L was 3,526 lbs., and the 6.6L was 'unavailable' but probably slightly more, the 1983 Firebird V8 was 3,050 lbs, the 1987 V8 was 2,985 lbs, and for a 4th generation example the 2000 Trans Am is 3,397 lbs. 6 cylinder cars are lighter but I just looked up the 8 cylinder cars. Really not too bad of a difference over the decades until the 5th generation came out.

I'm surprised at the weight of the third gens. Being under 3000 lbs is pretty impressive.

You need to be mindful that with the 4th gens there is a big diff betweens Trans ams and Camaros just by itself and the options there were avalible at the time. Certainly more luxury features were made avalible for the 4th and 5th gens (see IRS). Also offering a Aluminum Block in 1998 helped that offset further.

Many 1st gens that survived did become drag cars for a reason, it was a good platform and widely avalible.

In the end, who ever driving the car will determine the actual race weight and beleive me, trying to fight physics in a roll race with a guy 200 pounds lighter driver and at min 100 pounds lighter car and making generally same power shows how much weight factors in when he pulls you 3-4 lengths....

Came across this thread looking for something else. As far as the 3rd gens being light though, seems like you would have to consider the weight differences between years. Surely a fully loaded 92 Z28 Heritage Edition, is going to weigh more than the most basic 82 Camaro with the Iron Duke, and next to no options. I am curious about the weight differences between these two myself. The 82 no-optioned car would be great to build a motor strictly for racing, but the 92 just looks so much better!

3rd gens are generally lighter , if your looking to make the lightest car possible either with or without gutting it do a 3rd gen with an aluminum LS engine like 4th and 5th gens get now your even lighter than the 3rd gen stats.

I always heard the 3rd gens were lighter, just didn't know THAT much. Explains why they are so plentiful at the strip (cheaper too). Guess I better start looking for one for the motor sitting here for nothing to go in
