Default Trans Am and Camaro stock cats

I discovered Friday that I have to get direct fit cats. Which years and sides are interchangeable?

'98-'99 used the same cats, Y-pipe and manifolds. The cats and Y-pipe were changed for the '00-'02 models ('00-'02 were interchangeable), as well as the exhaust manifolds ('01-'02 were interchangeable, with '00 using the same design but drilled with a port for the EGR system).

In the respective years, what about across Camaro/Firebird platforms? Would a '98-99 driver side/passenger side cat fit a Camaro/Firebird? From what I've found online, the driver side cat might be interchangeable between the Camaro and Firebird.

Most definitely. Both sides are interchangeable between a Camaro and a Firebird of the same year/year group (meaning '98-'99, and '00-'02). I've personally put cats that were once on a 2001 SS onto a 2000 Trans Am (both sides, passenger's and driver's side). This is also true of the '98-'99 style cats/Y-pipe. As long as you are working within the same model years, all the exhaust parts are 100% interchangeable between Camaro V8s and Firebird V8s.

Excellent. That's good to know. Thanks. That will make my search easier. Hopefully, I can find some good stock cats for cheap. My inspection sticker is out, and I have can't get an inspection because of the inefficient cat trouble codes.

Good luck, people on here are buying cats up from people to scrap. Going for anywhere from 100 to 150 a pair.

I'd pay $100 for good cats. My car has 168K miles on it.

It looks like the only difference is the "y-pipe" with the Firebird. Is the Z28 setup a little different?

Is it exactly the same Y-pipe as the Firebird's? I wonder why the Magnaflow passenger side includes the Y-pipe and cat for the Firebird but the Camaro Z28 does not.

Wow, that's actually kind of strange to me, why do they need to sell you an entire Y-Pipe if you just want to replace the passenger side cat? I don't see the logic behind that. But, you could probably get away with buying the cheaper 1998 Camaro passenger side cat though, I'm pretty sure that would end up fitting.

The passsenger side cat is not a direct bolt-in on the '98-'99 cars (unlike the '00-'02 cars), it is part of the Y-pipe. It has to be cut out (or swapped with the complete Y-pipe from another '98-'99 if you don't want to cut and weld).

I urge you to look at some pictures of stock '98-'99 LS1 F-body Y-pipes, from both Camaros and Firebirds, and you will see that they are the same. Or if you can find a '98-'99 V8 Camaro locally, with a stock Y-pipe, to compare to your Pontiac.

There is no difference in the Y-pipe or cats between a Firebird and a Camaro of the same year. I would tell you to trust me, but I think you'll feel better if you see it for yourself.

No, I believe you. The Magnaflow application search was just confusing me. I'll just keep my stock Y-pipe and have the new passenger side cat welded in. It won't be a big deal. I'd like to find some good, cheap stock cats.

Here are the two different stock Y-pipe/cat configurations....

'98-'99 (both Camaro and Firebird):

On this model, the driver's side cat is not shown because it's a separate piece with a 3-bolt flange on the manifold end and a 2-bolt ball flange on the Y-pipe end.

'00-'02 (both Camaro and Firebird):

On this model, neither cat is shown because they are both separate from the Y-pipe, using 3-bolt flanges on the manifold side and 2-bolt ball flanges on the Y-pipe side.

Their is no distinction between Camaro and Firebird on either of these items (or the cats). Not sure why the Magnaflow catalog shows different items for the same year, but on the assembly line these parts were interchangeable.

Hope that helps.

Glad to help.

Have you tried posting an ad for used cats in the Parts Wanted section?

I have and in the Texas section. I got a response in the Texas section, but the guy has a 2001 SS.
