Trans Am and Camaro stock cats
I discovered Friday that I have to get direct fit cats. Which years and sides are interchangeable?

'98-'99 used the same cats, Y-pipe and manifolds. The cats and Y-pipe were changed for the '00-'02 models ('00-'02 were interchangeable), as well as the exhaust manifolds ('01-'02 were interchangeable, with '00 using the same design but drilled with a port for the EGR system).

Most definitely. Both sides are interchangeable between a Camaro and a Firebird of the same year/year group (meaning '98-'99, and '00-'02). I've personally put cats that were once on a 2001 SS onto a 2000 Trans Am (both sides, passenger's and driver's side). This is also true of the '98-'99 style cats/Y-pipe. As long as you are working within the same model years, all the exhaust parts are 100% interchangeable between Camaro V8s and Firebird V8s.

Wow, that's actually kind of strange to me, why do they need to sell you an entire Y-Pipe if you just want to replace the passenger side cat? I don't see the logic behind that. But, you could probably get away with buying the cheaper 1998 Camaro passenger side cat though, I'm pretty sure that would end up fitting.

I urge you to look at some pictures of stock '98-'99 LS1 F-body Y-pipes, from both Camaros and Firebirds, and you will see that they are the same. Or if you can find a '98-'99 V8 Camaro locally, with a stock Y-pipe, to compare to your Pontiac.
There is no difference in the Y-pipe or cats between a Firebird and a Camaro of the same year. I would tell you to trust me, but I think you'll feel better if you see it for yourself.

The passsenger side cat is not a direct bolt-in on the '98-'99 cars (unlike the '00-'02 cars), it is part of the Y-pipe. It has to be cut out (or swapped with the complete Y-pipe from another '98-'99 if you don't want to cut and weld).

'98-'99 (both Camaro and Firebird):
On this model, the driver's side cat is not shown because it's a separate piece with a 3-bolt flange on the manifold end and a 2-bolt ball flange on the Y-pipe end.
'00-'02 (both Camaro and Firebird):
On this model, neither cat is shown because they are both separate from the Y-pipe, using 3-bolt flanges on the manifold side and 2-bolt ball flanges on the Y-pipe side.
Their is no distinction between Camaro and Firebird on either of these items (or the cats). Not sure why the Magnaflow catalog shows different items for the same year, but on the assembly line these parts were interchangeable.
Hope that helps.
