Default 5.3 or 6.0 What years?

Question is what are the best years to use for swapping out a blown ls1 out of my 98 TA Vert, Just would like to beable to bolt on the ls1 stuff and drop in. Just wondering what years I should be looking for?

On the 6.0 go with a 2004 or newer block and on the 5.3 I would go with a 07 or newer block. What are your HP goals?

Up to 2000, maybe 01, the 6.0s had a long crank that cant be used with a manual trans. 07+ will have 58x reluctors, wont work with your ecu. Also, lots of 07+ 6.0 motors will have rectangle port heads, wont work with your intake.
So, 02-06
6.0: LQ4 or LQ9 wont have DOD or VVT.
5.3: LM7 or L59, if you can find an aluminum block L33
Pan, intake, exhaust, etc should swap over.

[QUOTE=garys 68;17272917]Up to 2000, maybe 01, the 6.0s had a long crank that cant be used with a manual trans. 07+ will have 58x reluctors, wont work with your ecu. Also, lots of 07+ 6.0 motors will have rectangle port heads, wont work with your intake.

So with having a 98 6 Speed, I need either or both 5.3 or 6.0 through the years of 02-06 if i'm understanding correctly. I've also heard anything from 99-06 will work. Just don't quote me on that. More input from other people would help.....

My understanding was only the 99-00 6.0 came with the long crank. Do a search on the conversions forum, you'll find info. Not sure if that's true of the same year 5.3s.

True. But some, not all had the long crank. All 5.3's regardless of year had the short crank because they were never offered with a manual or a 4l80e behind them which required the longer crank. After mid year 00, all 6.0's had the short crank with a spacer and flat flex plate to bolt up to the 80e or a 5 speed manual.

One other thing to keep in mind when installing an iron block motor in your fbody is that youll need to drill and tap a hole on the drivers side of the block for the alternator bracket. Its not a big deal at all, its just something that's easier to do while the motor is on a stand vs. in the car. The size is m10x1.5 fyi.

Just wanted to thank everyone again for the responding, but I have yet to find a block for the right year. So it looks like I'm just gonna pull the original motor and rebuilt it stock for now

My reply was for using two bolts... the 3rd one in the bracket cant be used on the iron blocks.

Where do you live? Around here the 5.3s are a dime a dozen.
There are a couple dozen on ebay, or you can look locally on:
