Default Couple of quick questions about the mighty ls1

So i have a buddy that makes unbelievable claims about his ls1. (its completly stock) im an lt1 guy so i dont really read up about every ls1 combo. I know a good head/cam set up ls1 can push 500whp. I guess my question is what is the max na hp from a stock ls1 with heads/cam, and what is the max hp the block can hold say with nitrous? Also is 400hp possible from bolt ons? And im not butthurt over my buddy having an ls1 and me an lt1. He claims like 700whp from a h/c set up. lol
thanks guys!

Also i guess i mean, reliable horse power, not hit it with a 300 shot one time!

There are very few heads/cam cars out there pushing 500rwhp. My old h/c ls1 did 425 to the wheels. Which is about the average. Tell him the ls1 is almost 20 years old and has been figured out a long time ago lol

Not really at stock displacement. 425-450rwhp is closer to reality for most, as mentioned above. But some very aggressive setups have gotten higher numbers. I would not consider 500rwhp to be a reasonable expectation for the overwhelming majority of H/C LS1s with stock bottom ends.

Lots of variables there. Probably best to check out the Dyno Results forum and look for some of the record numbers as reference.

400 flywheel horsepower? Absolutely! They come with 350hp stock, so common bolt-ons gets you to 400hp without much trouble.

400rwhp would be a tall order though. I think some people have hit this with stock internal LS1s, but that's going to take every bolt-on imaginable and every dyno trick in the book. Again, this would be more like record territory and not typical by any means.

That's totally doable, as long as there is also a blower, turbo, or N2O bottle connected to the engine. Otherwise, he must be looking at power numbers from H/C LS1s on a planet other than earth.

I don't know the context of what you are your buddy were talking about but he might be referring to the LSx platform in general. I hear a lot of guys say "LS1" when really they mean "LSx".
A built, big cube LSx can definitely hit 700rwhp N/A. However that's not going to happen with a stock cube actual LS1. Stock cube LS1 would probably go as high as 550-600rwhp NA in a full on race car build (race gas and all). Guys have hit 500rwhp NA in street cars on stock cubes.

I guess my question is what is the max na hp from a stock ls1 with heads/cam, and what is the max hp the block can hold say with nitrous?
What is a "stock LS1 with heads/cam"? What has to be stock? Just the block?
The max hp the actual LS1 block can take is over 1000hp. A lot of the reliability of the internals is tune related as well.

what you guys are saying is about what i thought the numbers would be. But i just wanted to hear it before i called bs on all his claims. he thinks 400hp is easily made with bolts ons and a tune. and 500plus should be no problem on heads/cam. all these numbers are for stock cubes bottom end. I always ask where he finds these numbers so i can go there and get the info for my lt1!

Well he is generally correct if he's referring to flyweel/engine horsepower. But in terms of rear-wheel horsepower, he's off by about ~50-ish hp.

A stock LT1 makes 460 crank horses, just swap one in yours real and then bust his nuts

Some LS1 boys are delusional

RPM covered all the questions well.
