when I hear "sports car", I think of very light, handling, small engine cars such as: Rx-7, Miata, S2000, etc. etc.

Well the Corvette is a two seater, relatively light, good power, decent handling and sexy looks. Yep it sounds like a sports car to me

yeah its definately a sports car though if defined by RWD, two seats, handling, acceleration, braking

often performance modified cars, sport compacts/sedans, muscle cars, etc are not considered Sports Cars, but share some traits.

A guy at my work called my car a sports car one day when he was talking about insurance... it's pretty subjective.

Yes, Corvettes are true sports cars. As stated above, two seats, handling, etc.

Our Camaros and Firebirds are actually Sports Coupes, as they have 4 seats.

Agreed. Muscle cars typically were (and still are) 4 passenger cars (except for the AMX).

Corvette has always been referred to as a Sports Car (because it's a 2-seater) even though it has come with some ground-pounding motors during the peak of the muscle car era.

Now the Bureau of Motor Vehicles here in Indiana refers to my 'bird as a Sports Car as does the Insurance Company.

My insurance company (Nationwide) lists the F-bodies as sports cars & the Vette as a touring car.

Maybe because the F-bodies are driven more sportily...ie, accidents.

Camaros/TAs are and forever will be a SPORTS CAR!

Isn't every car a traveling car? I mean, unless it's busted and just sitting in your driveway?

Only according to insurance. The F-body platform is a Pony car: 4 seater, 2-door, light weight (compared to muscle), small displacement V8 RWD.
