Default Should a 43,000 mi LS1 look like this???

Hey all,

I don't have much experience with LS1s; every engine I've worked on up 'til now has been cast iron. So...I pulled the oil pan on this motor to swap out rod bolts & install a modded oil pan, and I saw the nastiness below. This looks like crap to me, but I have no experience with an aluminum block and thought maybe it stains easier (but the crank is just as nasty & it's iron!!??). Does this look normal for a 40,000+ mile lower end? Looks to me like it's seen one oil change- at about 10,000 miles. Any recommendations for cleaning without totally tearing it down? THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

Breeze

BTW...I bought the motor this way- I change my oil more often than 30,000 miles!

looks like someone used crappy oil and never changed it. have you ever checked under the valve covers for sludge. While you have it open like that get some sea foam deep creep and clean it up. then you can some some regular sea foam through it later to get the rest if there is any.

Yep, just looks like failure to change the oil regularly. I would sea foam it. That would probably take care of alot of that and you wouldn't have to tear it down.

+1 on the seafoam. A couple of treatments with some seafoam will clean it up nicely.

In Europe they can also probably buy German Castrol at most parts stores.
