Default OMG And It Begins

Just got my WS6 down to Houston from Vermont. Today, when driving it home from work, check engine light comes on. I was already on my way to Midas to have all the fluids changed, and just had them scan it.

Came up with P1416 twice I believe it was. When looked up, said Air Pump.
Could the light have come on because of the dramatic change in climate???
I had him clear the codes to see if they come back on. Just sucks as the light was a constant nuisance when I had my formula, hope this isn't gonna be a repeat experience with another fbody

Also, if I need a new one, is it something I could possibly do myself? I've always been good at taking things apart and figuring them out and putting them back together. Have some basic mechanical experience, have been a mobile electronics installer for 5 years, so generally good at figuring stuff out. But if there is other components I could dmg potentially, let me know, and I'll have it done here at Midas or a dealer.

Thanks In Advance!

JZ

Default Air Pump

Mine did that after waking up from winter.
It blew the little 25 amp fuse that runs the air pump behind the
bumper infront of the wheel well cover on the drivers side.
I cleared mine and cleared the PCM so far so good
If you need a new one they are not hard to change.
You can listen for it running when the car starts up.
It sounds like a real high pitch fan.

I just had this happen to me. It's the Secondary AIR injection Check Valve.

It's the Air tube that connects to the passenger side exhaust manifold. Follow it up until you see the black check valve (the thing between the rubber hose and the steel pipe). F bodies have it next to the valve cover, Vettes have it near the rear drivers side of the block.

I think You need a 7/8" wrench and a 1" wrench (or two crescent wrenches )

Pull it off and spray brake/carb cleaner and shake it around. Follow up with some WD40. WHen I pulled mine off, a piece of gasket actually came off so I knew mine needed to be repaced. I've read that you could get them at Autozone, but I couldnt find them online. They have the PN stamped on the check valve, so you can call your dealer if it comes back.

You can also swap it with the left side check valve. If you do and the code pops back up and is now a P1415 then it is definitely the check valve assembly that needs replacing.

I was lucky enough to have HP tuners so I could clear out the code myself. Sucks if you dont have access to a code reader. Autozone doesnt allow the free use of them anymore

Replace the passenger side air check valve, easy to do yourself.

Autozone does have these, they are about $12, if you can't find it online go to the store and have them look it up. And you can test the old one, just try to blow through it (towards the manifold), if there is resistance, replace it.

Well, I found it looking it up under my car, but when I tried an LS1 powered car nothing came up. Autozone doesn't show a listing for this part for LS1 powered cars.

http://www.autozone.com/R,1838242/ve...ductDetail.htm

However, if you go to Part America and look it up, it says it fits either LT1s or LS1s.

http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...pe=281&PTSet=A

It's cheaper at Autozone, I'm pretty sure theirs will fit LS1s.

Sweet, that does look the same. The guy at Autozone couldn't find it in the system for my 2002. Thanks for the links.

Standard part # AV7.

http://www.standardbrand.com/wmimage...pg&partnum=AV7

You can reset your SES without a scanner:

Ignition on.
Remove PCM BAT fuse.
Wait 2 minutes.
Ignition off.
Replace fuses.

Or.. you can drive it for a few days after the repair, and the SES light will turn off by itself.

Just updating this thread since both links above no longer work.

Autozone part number is : 779-2929
Duralast PN: E204

I found it by searching for a 97 firebird, under parts-> Engine Management.

The part is called Air Pump Check Valve.

I think you jinxed me... On the way home, my SES light came on, stopped at autozone and code came up P1416 again. LOL Hopefully this time before celebrating all the august bdays, and I can take off whatever it is! LOL

I got plenty of wrenches so shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for posting a new link!

Well, I finally had to replace the check valve. I went ahead and removed the air tube with it still attached so I didn't bend or break it. And it was an absolute PITA to get the originally check valve out! It wouldn't only turn 1/4 then stop, spray it again to let it soak some, another 1/4 of a turn. LOL

Reset the PCM per eseibel67 instructions. Only drove it about 5 miles so far, light hasn't come back on. I was gonna replace both, but was only able to find one locally at the time. And after how much trouble it gave me on the passenger side..... LOL If it stays off, I'll wait a bit to do the driver side one. Unless that one isnt as common to clogging as the passenger one. Because you guys were right, it was def clogged, I couldn't blow at all through it.

Thanks again everyone for there posts, especially rocndav for the part#.

That part number is for an LT-1 engine . Mine is an 2002 with the LS-1 engine . Does that number work for either engine ?

It should, it's only a check valve.
