Default Troubleshooting an alternator: True or False

Some mechanics from a place I used to work told me that disconnecting the battery while the car is running is one way to check your alternator. Sounds crazy, but wondering if this actually works.

yes that is the way...just leave it running and when you unhook the battery it will be running off the alt. If the car shuts off then your alt. is bad...

Get it tested the right way!unhooking the negative cable while running can voltage spike the computer and then you wont have to worry about the alternator because the pcm will be friend. go to a reputable shop and have it diagnosed. $15.00-$20.00 for the test or $1200. for a computer do the math.

Thanks to both of you. I went ahead and took it off, and i'll go get it tested tomorrow, it's jsut that I really didn't think that was it cause I just replaced it about a month ago, and yes it was new. But after taking it off i realized that the Power Steering is leaking all over the damn thing!

NO

Zombie1 is right (although the PCM would be fried, not friend lol), that is called full fielding the alternator - not a good thing to do.

UTI instructors do NOT condone full fielding an alternator.
