Default reman alternators

so how many remanufactured alternators does it usually take to get a good one?

i just burned up two in two days and gonna cross my fingers and try number three tomorrow.

nothing wrong with my system got a good charge wire, 12.5V to the v reg., and good ground

first one just went bad after 10 seconds, second one put out about 18-19V for a minute or two

third alternator down, no clue why. it bench tested fine at oreilly before i brought it home. did nothing once i got it on.

(btw previous two tested bad when i brought them back in)

i guess the answer to my question is 3... b/c that's when you give up and buy a new one.

Normally when alternators keep frying like this....power steering fluid leaking onto them. I assume you would have seen the mess though.

Are these things actually frying where they are dead and stop working, even on the bench test?

Hows the excitor wire look?

You could be the most unlucky chap on earth and got 3 bad ones....but I doubt that.

Most Reman alternators are rebuilt as cheaply as possible. If you look around you may be able to find a good shop to rebuild yours, they typically use better parts. Or, get on ebay and buy a low-mile OEM one from a salvage yard. Like everyone else said check wiring.
Hope this helps,

got one off ebay a few weeks ago and it showed up and didn't even turn. luckily I got my money back from the guy.

i have borrowed a good alternator from a friend when i really wanted to drive it and the thing worked great all night. It just seems strange that an alternator with 80k miles on it works fine but I get nothing out of the reman alternators.

I'm gonna take number three back and have them test it again. if it fails i'm buying a brand new one

funny you post this cause I just put on my fourth one today, 3 in the past 2 months, whoever said new is better... depends on your definition of new, I have had rebuilds last longer than the aftermarket new alternators, I have been a tech for over 10 years so I install them frequently. Did you mean new at oreilly vs rebuilt or new from chevy new? They sell "new" pieces of **** at autozone, oreilly etc that are also built like crap. If you meant new from chevy im sure they are great but cost so damn much, and by the way I called Chevy today, THEY ARE ALSO REBUILT, effin crap!

Like I said I today put on number 4, 3 in the last 2 months, all have been ****, one lasted 10 minutes. The one I got today I got from NAPA, so far the most expensive but also so far the strongest and most consistent out of the box, it still does not charge well sitting at idle with the a/c and lights on, only about 12.7 volts, but better than the others, and cold fires up and holds about 14.4 for a bit. It also "looks" the most quality/original, not painted etc.

If this one takes a dump im buying the one from Chevy but again it too is rebuilt.

So basically after going through multiple different manufacturer's at this point I say the NAPA one is the best to go with. We will see down the road.

Oh also I ohmed out all my wiring, checked my battery even though its a new optima red top, checked my amperage draw etc etc... It IS the alternators, they SUCK! Worst part is I put on these same alternators every day at work on other cars with no problems but it seems the LS1 alternator is some bastard alternator that nobody can build properly.

I bought a new Autolite Pro Platinum alternator from Kragen 2 years ago, no problems at all with it.

I'd either go new or just buy one straight from GM, you can get one from GM for about $200 if you buy it online.

*edit* Holy crap I just checked Kragens website and they want $329 for it now, I think I paid around $160 for it wtf?

I wouldnt know where to start to find a regulator, brushes, bearings, armature etc if needed. I am assuming the regulators is what is failing in these cheapo alternators. Thats the other thing, dont know how to identify what specific internal part failed.

You need to take the radiator cap off....drive another car under it......and put the cap back on.

Wow, what a rip. I think the main problem with these alternators is 1)they are remanufactured with bad parts and 2) they are not engineered with enough amperage to supply the car with the current it needs, hence alternators going out prematurely. As far as me, I bought a new Alterstart 200amp one for $200 from online and it has been working fine for me so far.
