Read up on the issue here from the knowledgable and much respected members. Bought a truck starter, torqued the inboard bolt to spec and could only hand tighten the outboard bolt before it would skip. Its been starting without a problem for over a year now and i keep thinking one day im going to fix that. Thanks to the members here for saving my **** in a sense.
Mine did the exact same thing. I put some locktite o it and called it a wrap. I will deal with it on the day I have to pull the engine. I will either go with a new block, a LS3 or that bracket I posted in post #148.

Someone fabricated a bracket that bolts up to the broken block and make the starter solid as the Rock of Gibraltar. It mounts up to some existing holes on the block and also uses two of the bell housing bolts. Look at the pictures below for more clarity. It's called a starter bridge.

Look at the picture of starter bridge. The hole labeled #2 goes into the block where the broken screw hole is in the picture of my broken block (labeled #2 on the engine picture also). That area will probably have to be grind down so that the bracket is flush against the block to some degree.

Number 3 on the starter bracket goes to hole #1 on the engine block. Number 1 on the starter bracket goes to the bottom of the starter, which aligns with the hole that is busted on my block (labeled #2 on the engine picture).

Holes #4 & #5 on the starter bracket will go where the two, bottom bell housing bolts are on the engine. You'll remove those two bolts and use them as two of the starter bracket mounting screws.

So that's how it mounts. Now here's the kicker. The guy wants $370 for the bracket. That price is smokin' crack. He did have it listed for $350 but he has since raised the price. Here's his site. I only paid $220 to have mine welded bck together and the guy who welded it guaranteed it for life.

Here's a picture of it in place.

Here is the bracket I built. Works like a champ. $10.00 worth of iron and a little time.

I only see 2 mounting holes. How does it mount?

Smile

Add my name to the victim list.

The piece of my block is MIA. So, a friend of mine (britt2020) is going to try and help me make a bracket similar to the one their asking $370 for. I could easily see spending over $100 for such bracket, but $370 is a bit ridiculous.

I agree big time. Post whatever you come up with. I'd like to see it.

Or just have someone fill that area with weld in that whole area, drill a new bolt hole and tap it. That bolt isn't the one with all the stress, it just keeps the starter mounted and in place.

It will hold forever.

Just ran across this thread this morning and finished it just now. With 265,000 miles, original starter and some paranoia, I just ordered another starter with the housing for two long bolts.

Default Starter and starter bridge for Sale

I bought a AC Delco starter from a local shop and starter bridge from 2nd sucks racing to resolve the broken starter mount on the engine block of my 2002 Z28. Despite installing the beefier starter and the starter bridge it turns out the engine seized. I didn't get to the repair right away and the shops I bought the starter and starter bridge from would not allow me to return the parts. I ended up selling the car to a guy that dropped in a cast iron engine so he didn't need the parts.

I have a brand new AC Delco starter (model 337-1027) and the starter bridge that I would like to sell. I'm asking $140 for the starter (retails for around $180) and $300 for the starter bridge (retails for $370). Details for the two items can be found at the links below.

Starter Bridge

If you are interested in buying either the starter or the starter mount please let me know.

I was hoping that you were going to sell that starter bridge for cheaper, although I know exactly what they cost.
