Good info guys thanks. I need to confirm old style vs new and make the swap if needed. I'v been on here since 2003 but didn't know this can happen until my buddy on here mjs1012 had 2 break on him. So I researched and found this. He looks like hes got a small crack on the short bolt side of the mounting tab on block. Thanks again guys.

Well I joined the club. Looking for a solution that's not gonna cost $370 or require removing the engine. Gonna contact a local machine shop to see how much they would charge for welding and retapping. If it's over $150 then I figure I'll have to engineer my own bracket.
Thanks to everyone that's posted up pictures of their custom brackets so far

Your choices are pretty much laid out:
That's it, unless you are going to weld a crank to the front of your motor and hand start it yourself. You're going to need someone in the car to hold the ignition on though.
- A new block.
- TIG weld the old block.
- Get or fabricate a bracket.

Look at page 3..post #57. Its how I fixed mine. $200.00 is what the welder charged for coming to my house with his tools to fix it. WELL WORTH $200......

I used some 1/2" and 1/4" steel plate to make the bracket and then had a buddy MIG weld it together for me. Making this thing was a real PITA and it took alot of trial and error to get it to fit. I used a 4" cutoff wheel, sawzall, bench grinder, belt sander, drill press, a couple taps and some zinc spray paint. I also upgraded to grade 12.9 socket head cap screws with lock washers and used some lock tite.

All in all it cost me $10 for the fasteners and $150 for the starter.
I have alot of free time on my hands. If I worked 40+ hrs, had a family and wasn't able to borrow a vehicle then things would have been different.

I just went to my local auto parts store and asked for a starter from a 06 Sierra. From another thread I learned that you need to get the starter from a 6.0 motor. Apparently the 5.3 starter is a bit different.

Well for me it was a challenge. I went to an automotive machine shop and NicKey. Both told me they couldn't weld the block without taking the motor out. That's when I said I wasn't going to accept defeat and pay $370 for someone else's bracket.
