Oil for LS1?
I have had this car for about 4k miles now and used Castrol Edge in her. Is this what you guys recommend? I dont want to start a flame war on oils and just would like to know what you guys use and have had luck with. Also what weight I have been using 10w30.

Oh boy...here we go..........
1) LSx engines are absolutely NOTHING special....they are every day V8 engines.
2) Any oil that you can buy off the shelf, either 10-30, 10-40, 20-50, 5wt...etc.....non-synthetic or synthetic all works the same.
3) You only have to use a certain type of oil if your professional race engine builder tells you to becuase he built your engine with special tolerances that are WAY different than a stock or regular ""built"" engine.
I have used 10w30, 10w40, synthetic and non-synthetic....and for the past 7 years 20w50 cheap crap Castrol GTX regular non-synthetic oil, $2.39 per quart. Its the best by far, for expense and for what it does. I realized that oil choice is meaningless....CLEAN OIL means everything. "Clean oil of any type" trumps any type of super-duper expensive synthetic oil. There is absolutely nothing different in the way it runs, sounds, temperatures or anything else between all the oils I've tried.
Oh....and all you need is a Purolator filter. Change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles and that is all you can do to protect your engine properly. I've been doing just that for 144,000 miles with my 427ci stroker...and its still purring like a LION.
I wouldn't fall into all the bullshit OIL HYPE.........but its your car.
and BTW....there are VERY expensive oils that you cannot buy off the shelf at regular stores.....that is incredibly awesome stuff if you want it.

Agree with the rest, It's what you want to use and what you like most there is no "best" oil and "worst" oil...well unless u buy the bottom dollar store brand stuff.
Me personally, I use Mobil 1 Synthetic along with Mobil 1 filter manly because the original owner has been using it since day in the car so I continue to do so sure its a tad pricey but just get it when its on sale. I picked mine up 5.5quart bottle and a mobil 1 filter for 30 bucks at autozone.

Regular Castrol Syntec (none of the German stuff around here) or Mobil1 synthetic, 10w-30, and a Purolator oil filter, every 6000 miles. Daily beater gets whatever's on "oil sale special" (typically regular Castrol GTX) and a Purolator filter, every 8000 miles. No problems with either car yet, and the oil always comes out looking good.
Just for fun, I might switch to Pennzoil Ultra on my next oil change.

I was hoping that would be OK, that's one of the cheapest oils here too.
I'm not looking for "the best oil" or "what is everyone else running" I just want to fill, prime, start run and dump the cheapest crap I can without causing issues.
I was concerned that mineral oil might harden, shrink or swell LS seals.
Here in Australia there is nothing cheap in synthetic oil, we pay through the nose for oils here.

Thanks for all the replies folks.
I dropped in to the auto store today to pick up oil for the wife's car and checked the prices of the "cheep" LS compatible oils.
I didn't make a purchase for my project car, think I'll wait for a sale, $130 for oil and a filer was enough of a spend for today.
I took this photo of our Australian price on good old GTX ... nearly $50 for 5 litres, it's criminal !

I replaced the oil filler cap on mine because I think that the standard one for the Firerbirds is plain, so I put on the one from the Corvette, same engine. There must have been a marketing deal between Mobil 1 and GM because the Corvette cap shows the Mobile logo and says Special Engine Oil Required. It is all marketing, but that is the oil I have always used. 150k miles, no blow by, less that a quart loss between oil changes, no visible oil burning even at wide open. I think that the decision to stick with factory fill was a good one, at least for me.

I realize this is an old thread, just wanted to chime in, I live in a warm climate and have 61K original miles on Sara (2001 Z28). I am using Mobil 1 high milage 10W-40.
I had to laugh at a post about the price of Castrol 20w-50 oil, I remember when a quart cost 50 cents.
