Default HELP! my car is acting strange

So i pulled into my apartment today, turned the car off, no problems. I go out and start it up tonight and it barely turns over. It turned over on the first try, but the rpms wouldn't go up, so it took about 10 secs to make up its mind and decide to stay running. I put it in gear and take off then come to a stop sign. I come to a stop and the rpms dive dangerously low to around 350-400. I drove 3 miles down the road to where I was going and it did this the whole way. When I stopped in the parking lot, I put it in neutral, evetually the rpm's did go up to around 700-800, where they should normally be, but it took about 25 secs to do so. Luckily the car did stay running and didn't stall at all, but I'm still pretty worried. Any idea what this could be?? help would be greatly appreciated!

Don't quote me on this, but someone once told me that if something like this was going on it could be some type of idle control sensor.

Mine does something similar every now and then. When I start it, it only reaches about 500 or so RPM then dies immediately. Usually takes three starts to get it to reach 7-800 and idle normally. My guess is the security system, does the security light come on when this happens to you?

any chance its a dirty MAF sensor? I didn't notice the security light on, but since I wasn't really looking for it, I can't say that it was off either.

let me know if it improves after you clean the MAF...I've very interested to know. people say rubbing alcohol with a q-tip works good too.? I would clean mine tomorrow but its finals week and I really don't have any spare time.

Check the obvious before you go into code checking. check your battery voltage, alternator output, and battery connections. The barely turning over usually means low primary voltage, usually caused by a bad connection to the battery. Look at your ground connections at the battery and engine block. Low voltage can mess up a lot of things. The slow turning over is a signal of primary trouble, your computer will not work right with low voltage and amperage. Have fun!

I had a similiar problem - I talked to a R & D guy from Rousch Racing about it. I'm presuming you're not getting an engine light as well. Oil from a K & N air filter on the MAF will cause this situation - they referred to it as a rolling idle. Your MAF could be going away as well and as mentioned earlier your throttle position sensor could be shot.

I had a bad plug wire that made my car stumble and stall after startup. How old are your plug wires?
