Default A/C Question

My old compressor went out started making a horrible noise, so i bought a new one and when i put it in then charged it it blew cold for about three minutes then went warm. What could possibly be wrong with the A/C i am doubting the compressor because it runs fine and stuff. My mechanic friend told me something may be clogged and not letting the free on through well if you coulld help i would appreciate it.

Did you evacuate the system? If you did, did you let it hold vaccum before you refilled? Sounds like somethings leaking.

Did you replace your accumulator as well. I think that traps alot of the bad stuff in the system. I replace both of mine at the same time and have had no issues. Knock on wood!!

If you have an a/c manifold gauge, you can just hook it up and see what pressure you have in the system. You can also visually verify that the compressor clutch is engaging. If the compressor is not on, you likely have a leak, when the pressure is too low, the computer won't let the compressor engage. If the compressor is turning on, you probably have a clog.

That blows!

When the AC is on does the compressor clutch lock up - you can tell by watching the compressor pulley while someone switches the AC on and off.

Since you opened the system when you replaced the compressor, you should have replace the accumulator ($150 or so) and pumped down (vacum) the system to remove any moister BEFORE refilling it with fresh Freon. The vacume pump will tell you if you have a leak too. (Turn off pump after pump down and measure the vacume with a set of guages - the pressure - vacuum should hold unless you have a leak.

The screwed up thing is now that you replaced your compressor and didnt have the system flushed your warranty on the compressor is gone.Hope your compressor isnt messed up and its just a clogged oriface tube.

Oh yeh, I forgot the most important part.

Did you fill the compressor (system) with new compressor oil like the instructions tell you? Usually, this is a small can of oil that is sold in the freon section. It is injected into the system using the standard AC guages at the same time freon is added.

Not running oil in the new compressor will result in a AC system that is very cold but only for about five minutes. After that, the new compressor is toast.

Maybe it is time to re-load another pump.
