Default Ignition switch

How hard is it to replace on our cars. I was told that even if I do get one from a parts store I would have to go to the dealer and have the key programmed in order for it to work with my ECU. I just feel like paying an arm and a leg for the work if I can do it on my own. Any input appreciated.

thats not true, our cars use the vats sys, and all that is is a resisitor in the key. ive repalced the ignition cyl on a 2000 lumina with vats. i didnt like doing it, but it wasnt horribly difficult.

dont waste your time with the dealer, its very easy to do and the part is only 25.00. I replaced my switch and it only took a total of 2 hrs. As long as you unhook the battery and unplug the airbag harness under the column youll be just fine. The dealer will rape you i can guarantee that

Do I have to get any special tools or anything like that?? I need some insight and something to convince me not to go to the dealer. I know I can get the part for about $26. I just cant be without a car for long...

all you need is your basic sockets and some time and patience. Once you get the column out which is very easy, the switch isnt too bad. The only pita is the brake cable that goes into the switch. But with some muscle itll come out and go in. use the install writeup from www.shbox.com

I ended up paying a automotive locksmith to fix the problem. I beat going to the dealer. He charged me $95 total. But now I know how to do it myself since I was right there watching. Youre right, it isnt that hard...
