Angry Banging noise

i just bought a 99 TA about 3 weeks ago and i didn't notice this noise until 2 days after i bought it. when i take off from basically a dead stop there is a banging noise and it gets worse when taking off around a corner. it only happens when i accelerate pretty good (not just WOT). i've heard it could be a tranny mount but i checked that and it isn't worn real bad or cracked. the noise seems to be coming from the rear, but i also started hearing a similiar noise from the front it seemed like. Any ideas??

another noise i just noticed was when i am driving around 45+ mph and hold the gas there is a whining noise while cruising, but if i let off the gas completely the whining stopped. i thought it could have been the serp belt but i changed it and that didn't help. Any ideas on this one??

well for the bangin noise...if it does it around a corner its probably your torque arm mount..but then again if its makin a bangin noise in the rear it might be your transmission mount is was for me made the same noise your talkin about.

Gear noise? Is it definitely coming from the front? Have you hung your head out monkey style to listen?

It sounds like a rear axle gear noise, from your description. Most gearset noises I repair are from just like yours- noise when accell and none when coasting. Most commonly backlash adjustment on gearset.

Well, for starters, remove rear axle cover and use dial indicator to measure ring gear backlash. I don't remember the spec. off my head, but I think it's .008"-.012" is ok. Also use some marking compound and see if correct pattern on ring gear teeth. If your backlash is out, then you would need to +and - shims on the carrier (add thickness to ring gear/subtract to other side to decrease backlash and vise versa to increase backlash). If noise has gone on long enough damage might be already done to gearset because it wears excessivley when not properly set up. In this case just replace gearset. But I would start with measurements and go from there. Just make at least 4 measurements for backlash, because if the variation exceeds .003" you might have a bad carrier as well.

Settle somewhere in the middle, 3.42's or 3.23's will be better on gas and you won't get too much more performance out of sticking with 3.73's.

I have the same problem, and figure it's the TA or the eroded jouncers (bump stops).
I checked the tranny mount and exhaust system, and found no issues.
Only does it on HARD accelerations, like a thud, thud, thud. Don't think it is the rear diff or u-joints!

I would recommend taking a closer look at the tranny mount and the torque arm mount. On my 96 T/a I would have bet you money the tranny mount was fine, I pulled it apart and found out that the rubber was worn on the inside and weak. Replaced it and the clunk was gone.

I had the rear end noise as well and someone advised me to flush my rear differential fluid, which would have helped had it not been for the fact that my rear end was worn out. I just found out that the bearings were bad, and there way metal shavings everywhere. I would check to see if your rear end has not gone out as well.
